DPI versus PPI - what is it? Explained

November 21st, 2010
There have been a number of questions and discussions recently about image resolution, what it is (in relation to PPI) and what it does. Mostly the discussions have centred around the term DPI, which is actually about something else entirely - that is, totally different to the intent of the discussions.

I found this great little explanation here which, though some may need to read parts of it a few times if the terms are unfamiliar, explains quite succinctly the differences, the wherefors and the whys of it.

Thanks for that helpful info. I can now understand that when a newspaper specifies a certain # for the resolution of an image they may really be referring to the "pixels per inch" instead of the "dots per inch", even if they might be using the terms interchangeably. And that dpi refers to how the image is printed, rather than how it is generated digitally. Great link to have for a reference!
