New Canon 5Ds

February 18th, 2015
Hello friends, just wondering if anyone has read the reviews of the new canon super cameras yet? If i was considering buying a 5D 3, should I wait till June for the new Canon? Cost is not a real priority. Thanks. Jen

Models only are out there, and it's only been a week since announcement. The preliminary information is a little confusing, but interesting. http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canon-eos-5ds-sr/5

This rather specialized camera does seem like an interim stop-gap until Canon goes in with both feet for a 5D mark IV. 50mp, who really needs it? Unless you are printing huge canvases, or a medium format aficionado, you don't even need 24. But Canon has done a lot to assist stability and mirror/shutter shock right from the start, learning from the Nikon D800 experience no doubt. That's very nice, and they appear to have gone even further than Nikon with the D810.

Low Pass "cancellation" on the S R sort of seems a bit retrogressive, replaying the Nikon D800/D800E awkwardness. Understandable if they haven't yet ironed out all the issues behind removing that filter entirely. 6400 max ISO, extending to 12800, that's seems weirdly low in today's market. The RGB AF/metering sensor of the 7Dii has been adopted, that's good, but Canon has to do even more about focus tracking to really challenge Nikon's best-in-class 3-D Tracking, if the 7Dii implementation is any indication. Perhaps we are to wait for that on the yet-to-be announcement 5Div. Still no on camera flash, if only to act as a remote commander. Real "auto ISO speed sensitivity" like the 7Dii, finally.

The APS-C "crop modes" seem silly (as are Nikon's); if you are going to spend so much on the camera for "pixel count," why hobble it with half the sensor? I wonder how they have implemented it? Probably simply chopped away at the edges it seems.

Not particularly strong video and no related dual-pixel sensor in Live View (from the 70D) is very disappointing.

Much of this might change/improve in four months, I would hope so. But it will be premium priced for sure, MSRP I haven't yet seen. Even so, I would certainly wait to see what comes to market. But this not a 5Div, a "successor" to the 5Diii, that we are still awaiting for Canon to announce. If I were a betting man, I'd say it's 2016 for the 5Div in the market. Announce at Photokina in September perhaps?

Most unusual for Canon to pre-announce so far in advance, it does seem to be an attempt to freeze the full frame market and not discourage current 5Diii sales.

I agree with what Frank @frankhymus says. If I was in the market for a full frame camera I would wait for the 5D mk.IV. It will probably be a much better all round camera and with much better video too.

The 5Ds and 5Dr are specialist cameras for pros who need that kind of resolution.

My guess is that the 5Ds and 5Dr is Canon's attempt to try to capture market share in the medium format camera market. My guess the target market would be commercial, fashion & landscape.

The 5D mk4 is to address the lowlight event (i.e wedding and concert) and sports (because 5fps on the 5Ds and 5Dr is slow as heck).

So it may all depend on what you normally shoot. The 5D mk4 would be the best general purpose full frame camera but if you don't really care about the best low light performance and FPS, the 5D mk4 seems to be an interesting beast. You will also need to consider buying the best glass (pricey) to take advantage of the resolution.

Canon has produced this fourteen minute long Youtube clip which details some of the technology behind the new 5D models and who they are aimed at. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl6AKRadEsw

Thanks for this info, I wasn't aware the 5D 4 has been launched, does anyone know when this will be available? Jenny sprout.

@jennysprout The 5Div is yet to be announced, but eagerly awaited. It *may* make it to the market by Christmas this year.

there are rumors that the 5D Mark IV will be announced in mid- March of this year, but wouldn't be available right away.

I attended a workshop with a Canon rep last night - he showed some images from the 5Ds- impressive, but as others have stated, who needs that much?? Plus when you get that much detail, then you run into programs with hand holding - anything!

Thanks to all of you, I may just settle for the 5D 111
