so i've seen a few comments around the 365 site about the lunar eclipse and realise that some people have incorrect understandings of the lunar eclipse and how often it happens.
yesterday's full lunar eclipse, which happens around every 3 or 4 years (the last one in australia was in 2008), also coincided with the northern hemisphere's winter solstice and the southern hemisphere's summer solstice. THIS all together is quite rare and has not happened for almost four centuries, and will take almost another century to happen again, although then only with the northern hemisphere's solstice.
the fact that the solstice happened at the same time only meant that some people in the world could actually view the sun AND the moon at the same time, very briefly. it does not make a difference to the actual full lunar eclipse, we will have TWO of those in 2011.
i just didn't want anyone to think they had to wait 80 or 90 years for this photographic chance, there'll be another one in around 6 months :))
and i'll be out there hoping for no clouds and better experience and knowledge of my camera hahaha ;-))
This is an odd year... I believe there are two more in 2011 June and Dec... and me viewing the sun and the moon in the north is a daily thing.... solstice only means the days get longer now!!! YES I could have sun light after work by Feb!!!
The trouble for me in June is that the sun only sets for a few hours in June, so night photos are sad.... Eclipse on longest night... means it is VERY dark... which is nice for astro-photo
BUT it is worth point this out if people are confused... and I look forward to your posts in the summer/winter as we stay up all night and do it again!
@taidster thanks for those links! I've got the next ones set in my phone. We had a thin layer of clouds here in SE QLD, got to see the very end of it, but hope to be able to get some better ones next time.
@icywarm yeah i knew about solstice being the shortest day etc, but had read about the sun and moon view as well ... although, i'm not quite sure what a summer solstice is, maybe the longest day of the summer and now they'll get shorter and shorter? hmm, maybe some more google haha.
love your username btw, funny ;)
@neda you're welcome :) it was slow rising and and i had to go up to higher ground behind my house to see it, and then just missed the full part, bummer, and if you see my photo, you can see how close that thin cloud came to ruining what i did manage to get hehe. can't wait for the next one :)
