Changing from Windows 7 to Windows 10

June 6th, 2016
I'm scared to death that my main computer that I do all photo editing on is about aging out on me (nearly 6 years) Is the change to Windows 10 with the Adobe editing (CC and Lightroom) going to be a horror - I'm definitely not too computer knowledgeable.

I only wish I knew that I could return back to Windows 8 in a month. Now it is going to be a drama. Why do I want to reverse back, well I cannot get my computer to recognize my phone in the usb ports and I find it harder to find features on the computer. I also have had my power randomly turn off while plugged in. On the positive note, I have not had problems with Lightroom.

I am planning to just keep on using Windows 7 until I replace my computer (It also is around 6 years old). I have read that Microsoft is going to keep providing security patches for Windows 7 until 2020 (by that time I imagine I will have to get a new computer, which I am certain will come with Windows 10 installed.)

My sons are computer-savvy; they build their own computers -- and they also are just going to wait to upgrade as they have concerns that their current hardware can handle Windows 10. They say the same as this article: http://www.economist.com/news/science-and-technology/21699372-microsofts-offer-free-upgrade-windows-10-about-expire-why-upgrade-windows-10?fsrc=scn/tw/te/bl/ed/?fsrc=scn/fb/te/bl/ed/whyupgradetowindows10, if you would care to check this viewpoint out.

That said, though, we all only have until June 28, I believe, to get the free upgrade ...and "free" is hard to resist!

You can always go back to Windows 7 if 10 doesn't work out. For my desktop, I bought a new SSD drive (They'r around $150 nowadays) and installed Windows 10 to it. Tried it for a week and when I was sure everything worked well, I copied my files from the old drive and reformatted it (use it as additional storage now). You just have to make sure to create the installation USB drive from your Windows 7 instance so it includes the free Windows 10 license.

...and I'll add, while it did take me some time to locate where everything was moved to, I'm loving windows 10. Such a huge improvement over Windows 8, and in line with the Windows 7 experience.

I changed to Windows 10 and didn't have any issues with Lightroom :) and now my printer works again (thank heavens I didn't bin it) Just couldn't get a driver to work for it under Windows 8, so there are positives to the upgrade!
