I have explained underneath what the problem was, and I have left the photo unedited so that you can see what the pic really is like. Basically, I want to know what I was doing "wrong" or how I could have captured the photo better, or is the issue a lack of decent equipment?
i agree with teresa to have a fast shutter speed as the moon moves very fast when you think about it . So the faster the shutter the clearer the shot. Hope this helps
to take a decent photo of the moon- I have been told you need to underexpose your shot.... by about 2 stops.... so when you set up your camera you need to have it on manual and then set it up to under expose or you can on some camera's set it up to automatically under expose in which case you can use shutter speed priority.
hope that helps- look forward to seeing lots of moon shots from you and experiment with all this new info
I did a bit more experimenting with day moon shots, and played with the white balance on my camera (unfortunately the only thing I can adjust!), and I did find it made a difference, but the photos themselves weren't too great, but it gave me a bit of an idea for when it comes to taking more photos. I think this is one area I will practise on for awhile before I share! LOL!!!!

Go to Aperature Priority Mode - F/7
ISO - 200
centre AF
Aim at the moon with camera on a tripod and zoom in as close as you can
Press shutter half way until the focus locks.
At the bottom of the view finder it should look something like.
200th of a second
Go to manual mode and dial in F/7, but now increase the shutter speed by 2 full stops - so then it should be at 400th of a second..
Play with the shutter speeds until the pic looks good and it's best to catch the moon when it first pops up.
Hope that made some sort of sense!
