Just an idea but who would be in favour of having our own public voting area? Maybe Ross & Co could make an area for us to submit one photo a week and at the end of the month we could make the vote?
I, for one, would like to see a 'people's choice' on here. Could be fun.
Am not sure what you mean by this.. How would it work? If you mean that we all submit (if wish to) a photo every week then it would go into their hundreds. To be posted up on a wall would be difficult and to plough your way through hundreds to vote would take yonks. Not sure if its workable?
Ooh, and its already been said that its a popularity contest, would that not fuel the fire?
I think the recent threads of people's submitting others work that is over-looked, or the one where you chose your fav pic on the person who last wrote was close to this, and an excellent way to see other pics that might have been missed.
Yes, maybe one a week would be too much, how about one a month? I just feel it would be nice to have an alternative voting system that we have a direct input. It's just a thought.
I think one a month is good! Like, next to the 'fav' button, you could have a 'people's choice' button. But you can only pick one a month (I'm not sure how the site would log that, but it would have to somehow xD). And then, the photo with the most 'people's choice' clicks wins it for that month. :)
there are too many beautiful photos how to pcik just one.May be we coud mix "browse and pick" and your idea vote. We could for i.e. pick up one of July from the photographer just in before us.
On Flickr, there's the Explore page that allows you to view random popular photos from the past week. That would be good here, with the option to shuffle to see a different pic or set of pics.
I think it sounds like a really good idea. It would just have to be set up like the theme works and the people who wanted to enter into the peoples choice could and the ones who don't then they don't have to. Instead of one person going in and voting it would be left up to us and maybe who ever starts it could be the one who talley's up the votes for the first month and then maybe the winner of the 1st could talley the second month and so on. That is if we can't get it set up to have a button made for us so the computer would do it for us. It could even be that we submit our photos under a certain tag like we do for the theme and then as I said above the person who started can pick their favorite 5 and then post them and we all vote and then the winner can do the same for the next week or month and then so on. With that you still have a new person every month or week picking out their favorite so its different peoples taste and not set on just one persons every week or month. I think that the browse and pick was enjoyable for a lot of people so I don't see why this wouldn't work as long as everyone works together.
There are some great suggestions here. Thank you Tracy. I wonder if any of these discussions are ever read and acted upon by the powers that be or are we just left to ramble on?
I am not keen on this but I am just a "small fish in the pond" or
"a single negative amongst the photographic laboratory collections". I don't know that this isn't going to be a good idea if we really want to go that Competitive why not go to a sight that does competitions. I understood this was a mainly learning website, and not overly competitive, as such. If we want to stay as is, and also get competitive send a photo to the sites that do those sort of Competitions. I'm sure those of you in the know will have plenty of links to the sites I mean.

As a PS read about the problems currently being encountered, surely by getting into another competitive type of submissions we are going to compound any problems that are already there. If people really want this on this site and Ross evens considers it, then 2011 may be the obvious way to go then some hiccups can be fixed by then. Just a thought.

You are not anti anything. You are entitled to your view and l thank you for it. I am not in favour of this site being too competitive either, its just l would rather like to see more 'power to the people' if that was possible so we, as the users and, in a lot of cases, the financial contributors, had more of an input.
As Tracey said, for those that don't want to participate, they have the choice. I wouldn't want it to become too serious. I love the fun aspect amongst a lot of us on here and would wish to keep it that way.

I think that Trevor's whole idea of this was not to make it about competitions, it was more along the lines of the people getting to vote instead of just Ross. I don't think its a stab a Ross either. Everyone has different opinions when it comes to choosing their favorite pictures and when its just one person out there picking out the pictures then a lot of pictures and people for that matter are being left out and their work isn't being seen when its very deserving to be seen. Plus I don't think that having a peoples choice is any different than the weekly themes or the popular page or the top 20 for the week for that matter. It would just be another fun thing for us all to do that wants to participate. Not everyone on this site participates in theme and I am thinking that peoples choice would be kind of like that, you enter in if you want to and if you don't then that's fine too. I honestly don't see it being any different than whats already happening on this site. I know there are other places to get your work seen and enter into competitions, but this is so much different, this isn't some prize you are winning for having the best photo, this is a chance to get other peoples opinions on what they think the best photo is.
