Good enough for local art contest?

August 15th, 2010
Hi! I am super-new to photography and this project, but our county arts council is doing its 2nd annual juried art contest next month and I would really like to enter. The theme is "Fur, Fins or Feathers." I live in a small community of wonderful people so I'm not afraid to enter, but I would really love your critique, opinion, tips and advice. If it totally stinks and I would embarrass myself by entering, then let me know :) I processed this photo in picnik and still really have no clue about editing. The pre-processed photo can be found at the link below.

Hi Alison, your image doesn't stink, it has a nice depth of field and tonal range but it seems to me that the subject matter here is less about fur than 'fags', can you explain what your intent was when you took the photo, does the title of the image explain the correlation between the cat and the ash tray, because I think that this is what the judges will be asking themselves, regards, Peter

p.s. just looked at your photos and I think that 'Puppy Love' (my favourite) or 'Can't Hang' would be more in line with the theme of the competition, good luck!

Hi Alison - hehe - I really love your picture - its amusing and thought provoking. It's also quite sensory - makes me imagine the smell of tobacco (something I miss!!) The edit is good too.

Nothing wrong with the pic, but I'll wager the local arts council won't want to be seen to advocate cigarettes in any way - even pictures of them - in case it upsets one random old lady or something. I imagine it's the subject rather than the image quality that may be an issue.

That said, it's a great shot and I may just be cynical about the PC buerocracy of councils - enter it anyway! I reckon its a wiinner

Thank you both SO much for your input!

Peter, yes, the initial picture was all about the cigarettes...in fact, it was about 2:30am when I took it and was simply playing with my camera when my cat happened to squeeze her way into the photo. I actually liked the way it turned out and will probably print it and hang it somewhere in my house!

Simon, I think you are absolutely correct about submitting a photo with cigarettes. I can just imagine some of the local ladies in town gossiping about me and wondering if I'm a smoker (which I'm actually not)...and being an attorney with a blossoming career, I don't need any gossip :)

Again, thank you both so much! I value both of your opinions and appreciate you taking the time to give them! Peter, I may just enter "Puppy Love" and "Can't Hang" as I agree they are two of my favorites as well and I would really like to see more photography in these local art contests!
