When I was at uni I started experimenting a lot with multi-exposure and movement within photos as a way of portraying mental pain and decay - something which I am very interested in. I did this style again for my photo yesterday, and was wondering what you all think - do you like the style? Do you feel it conveys disturbed mentality well enough? Does the editing enhance the photos, or detract from it? Would love to hear what you all think!
The image you used for yesterday's photo is extremely powerful. The title that came to mind (before reading you caption) was "Tormented." That photo draws you right into the subject's mind and is an extremely compelling composition.
Yesterday's photo is much better than the other four you've linked. I found the others to be too undefined to truly capture the meaning behind the image. Yesterday's nailed it. I did not need to read your caption to understand what you were trying to convey. You did it perfectly.
Now, you raise an interesting question regarding whether or not we like the style. SHOULD we like the style? I'm not sure! What you are trying to depict is internal turmoil. The style should force us to watch, much as we cannot resist looking at an accident scene, regardless of how disturbing the sight may be. In that sense, I think the style you selected works extremely well.
I agree with Ron on this. The image is very powerful, very ... um, how do I say this ... mind-whacking?
it certainly tells a story to those who are willing to listen and is in the same way somewhat disturbing and also a bit depressing. It is indeed nicely composed and a great piece of work, but it leaves me behind with some awkward feeling I cannot quite name, so I assume it did it's job well.
@kannafoot thank you for your in depth critique there, I agree with you because to a certain extent I want people to look at this style of work I do and not be certain as to whether they should be looking at or enjoying it at all. I experimented with a similar technique with a short film as well, high definitely made the viewers feel uncomfortable. Think I might have to experiment more with this!
i too think the image is very powerful. I only joined the Project 365 today. I work in mental health and have done so for over 20 years. In a way i found the image scary. However, I feel I understand the 'out of body' experience, especially as I too have had experiences of depression over the years. I agree with Ron, should we like the image? no i don't think so but do we feel the torment - I do.
