Some of my favorite sites with photography tutorials are DIYPhotography.net, Instructables.com, and YouTube.com. It's fun to read/see how effects are achieved, how to build studios, various tips and tricks, etc. And then, because it's a tutorial, you can try it out for yourself and see what's going on.
