Fairy wings - Crit meh

February 18th, 2011
Going to spend a little more time on this project and as such i figured id get some feedback to maybe give me some fresh perspective on things i may have missed.

NOTE: I know the blending of the wings to the back is terrible (is the main reason im putting more work in)
If anyone has any suggestions what i should do with it (especially w/ example photos) that would be great [:

sidenote: all images in this are my own photography and the wings i painted myself

I really like this :) the fairy is such a whimsical thing, and the bit of color showing in the sky looks very dark and stormy. Perhaps lighten that up a bit with some pink or purple tones to contrast the wing color a little?

yeah I really love the overall effect here- very magical! I would definately agree with @sdpace about lightening up the sky (or wings) to add more contrast, also maybe try to lighten up the hair a tad as that seems to be blending in with the background. The blending needs a little attention, but you already know that. So, other than those 2things- very nice.

@sdpace @rebcastillo77 - Thanks for the crits guys, really appreciate it! I have a strong habit/liking for Rembrandt style art/lighting so my work tends to end up darker then average.. I tried rly hard to not make it very "dark" but ill have to play around with it summore.

I am thinking that taking some of the color away from the wings and making them more "white" and brighten them a bit is where ill try first. I tried magenta/purple color for the wings but it does not go with the coloration on the model (though it was very pretty!)

Keep the crit commin! It certainly helps my ideas flow better [:

Try to use the pen tool if you using photosop, and make a selection og it, the blending is going to be much better, the photo is beautiful

@3nder - this is something that I look for and don't always achieve myself, but I feel as if this image requires a touch of space. It is a visual overload and I think the wings get lost a little. I would perhaps lose the tree silhouette in the background and shrink them down to the size which would fit along the shadow of her arm. That arm and the shadow looks like a field, and with the silhouette trees there, would give the viewer the impression of a Pixie-forest. This may free up your true sky and give more space for the wings???

Just my humble opinion...

my opinion is the back ground is too busy and i had to look for the wings as they sort of blend in, also the models costume is very ordinary, can that be made more whimsical, make the fabric slightly sheer/lighter in texture and more faiy like, also highlights in the air,be it in colour or fairy dust sparkle.
obviously you are free to disregard my comments as tosh as i highly likely have no clue what i am talking about, i do love the concept of the shot though

@bobfoto Interesting idea, ill try it out see what happens. I struggled a lot with the "cluttery" feeling BG, and i agree that its still not where id like it to be. The hardest part for me is figuring out something that works well with the angle..

@sallycheese haha nonsense! usually people who dont know much about how to do things like this give better comments b/c they dont concern themselves with how difficult something might be so they dont limit their ideas by that ;]
Changing the outfit may be difficult, but i can see where that would make a difference. Im not sure i could pull it off w/o spending an excessive amt of time on that but since the model is my fiancee i could always reshoot it.
Its become apparent i should pay more heed to the fact that an average person's monitor isnt calibrated when im making darker shots... This may be why it was harder to see the wings >.

@3nder - yeah, I have had to crank up the brightness to get some good definition for the wings.

As a mom with 2 little girls who love everything fairy like I get to read lots of books with fairy pictures. A few of them have beautiful drawings of a fairy at night that have the same kind of feel your photo has. I think a fairy in the dark adds a bit of wonder/mystery/dreamy feeling... I like the dark sky in the back. I love the painted wings but they do get lost in the sky. Would adding light to the wings or an aura around the wings let you keep the mystery of the night but show the beautiful wings? Your sky is beautiful! It would be a shame to loose that dark night sky. I think adding light or light colors to your wings would go better with her white top.... I don't know anything about taking pictures or doing photo edits so feel free to say or think I don't know what I'm talking about.
