Hi there! I've been having a problem recently and I hope somebody out there can help me! :D
Since spring has arrived, there are tons of beautiful flowers blooming in my yard - as evidenced by the glut of flower pictures on my March calendar. But there are a couple of red ones, a rose and a tulip, that always come out overexposed when I try to photograph them. It's just the red ones. Is there a way to correct this? Are bright red things always this hard to photograph?
I don't have hard evidence, but I think Nikon's sensors do have trouble handling red frequency light. I've overcome it mostly by increasing exposure manually, by 1/3 to 1/2 stop. Not sure if the L20 can do that; you can overexposure by a stop using Aperture priority mode. (Sorry if you already knew that)
If the camera has a "+" or "-" for white balance (+1, +2, +3), etc, play with it. Auto White balance is not what it is cracked up to be. And I've noticed that digital sensors do not comprehend purples too well.
Toy around with the white balance, perhaps get of of Auto White balance, and try the "cloudy, or "sun" setting, and see what happens.
I have the same problem and I use a canon. I always use the custom white balance and it still doesn't make a difference. I've noted that the colors aren't so overexposed when the white balance is off and the picture focuses on the blue hues more such as in the picture below. If you change the white balance to fluorescent lighting, it might do the trick.

Good luck!
