Critiques please

June 12th, 2011
Hi everyone. I would love if you could take a moment to give me some feedback on a couple of pics Ive taken in the last few days. Starting to get a feel for my DSLR and would love some tips on how I can improve. Cheers!

and this one :)

Personally, I really like both. On the first one I wouldn't have placed the subject in the centre, i think the photo would gain from the silhouetted people being more to the side. I'm also not sure about the very tall and thin frame, I would maybe have composed it without so much of the sun flare. But as I said, I still really like it the way you posted it.
In the second one, the composition is great, and their expressions are priceless, I'm having a hard time thinking of critique! I think it's a pity that we can't see all of the shadow, but I can imagine it would have taken a whole lot of space. Maybe give black and white a shot since the colours don't add much to the shot?
Overall, really good start in my opinion =)

@beelzeboss Thanks so much, I will give the second a go in B&W. I agree with the framing ideas for shot one, I'm not 100% sure about it either. i will keep 'fiddling' using some of your tips and see if I can get it to feel a bit more 'right'.

wow, I really love the first one with the sun burst and silhouettes!

I love the composition of the second picture, but agree with the previous comment that it would be nice to see the full shadow. Also, the faces are a bit too dark. I know how difficult it is to work with sun and shadows, especially when you're trying to be spontaneous. A simple reflector would help here, such as a foil covered piece of cardboard to catch the light and fill the shadow on their faces.

@trudip
Wow two amazing shots.
I can't really say anything bad about them them.

The first one looks near perfect (for me at least).
I like the framing. Even though the subjects are centered, it works great for this photo with the sun being where it is.
I agree with @karageiger about the second one. If you can get all of the shadow in to the frame it would be even better.

i would have liked longer shadows in the first pic aswell but other than that and the previous comments about the 2nd pic then they are pretty near perfect

I really like both of them. My only critique would be the shadows on the faces in number 2.

@kjarn @karageiger thanks everyone, I agree that the faces are a little dark but had no idea how to lighten them up. I had tried to lighten them up through editing but then lost the shadows in the rest of the pic. Thanks for the tip about the reflector, although you are right about spontenaity. Just happened to have my camera in the car when we went to the beach however maybe I will make a few little reflectors etc. that I can keep in a 'travel' box. I will have to have a practice with reflectors next time we have some sun.

@rich57 Thanks Richard, I've been practicing with sunbursts and shilouette so I am glad to hear that I am hitting the mark :)

@nipuna777 @sallycheese Thaks for your ideas around shows length, I focus so much on subject that I hadn't thought of how the shadows were falling. I will think about this a bit more from now on.

pic #1 I wouldn't have took the pic including the sun, lots of bright light, you probably would have ended up with a silohuette of the children
pic #2 if the shadow has got to be there I make sure to include it, and the little girl is looking that way , like maybe she was checking out just how big they looked
