Nice portrait.

Maybe the lighting on the face isn't right, causing some 'blow-out' and loss of skin tones?

Here it is with a little change, There is still some slight (hot spots) in the forehead area

It's nice, but that forward tilt seems odd to me.

This is a great shot but the subject seems to be falling maybe have her left shoulder back a little more and stighten her back. great shoot love the eyes

She's lovely, but it does kind of look as though she's crouching down a bit to accomodate the camera.

Is this the original? I wouldn't have cropped in so closely to her, so you have more room to tilt it back a bit. And the lighting is too bright on her face. It would be nice warmer and with more of the details of her skin and features.

The shot is very pretty but the lighting is a little strong on the face. Also if you are going to pose leaning forward I would have the camera a little higher and the subjest tilting their head up more to the camera.

Thanks- those critiques are just what i needed.

hows this one?

cant do much about the positioning- was a close focus for the original.

hows the exposure on this one?

I don't like the pose but it's a nice pic :)

You took a lot of the pink out, which I personally think makes it look better. The first thing that struck me was a pink color cast. (I'm saying --not well-- that I think it looks better without the pink) When I look at the picture, I tilt my head as well so I can "see" it (even though I can clearly see it without tilting my head). The second one seems to also have that pink hue to it.. and it looks like it was taken midday-ish with the fingers all blown out from sunlight. The focus is pretty lost, so I enjoy the first portrait better. That being said, I am no expert ;)

I like the original. It is bright, but ok for a high key portrait I would say. The later version might be a better exposure for the skin, but the eyes and hair are also darker, and I'm not sure if it's better or not.

The second portrait - the focus is soft, not crazy about the background, but I think the face is exposed, nice expression. Maybe crop out the background and hand. But will still be out of focus a bit, looks like the focus is on the far shoulder/hair.

Hi all- Thanks for the comments-

ive tried fiddling with the second shot but cant lower the blow out on the fingers or get rid of the pink cast which is annoying- your right about the focus.

as for the original picture- ive tried to deal with the skin exposure whilst keeping the brighter eyes and hair- did i manage it??

i managed to spin it round- what do you think??

I wasn't bothered by the angle, but yes I think looking at this last image it is an improvement over the original. It's all very subjective. It's a terrific portrait.

Looks better to me, lighting is good now.
July 25th, 2011
Ok, Mary, I played with it for a minute. The angle didn't bother me, but I went ahead and used your latest version to play with. The pinks still bothered me a bit. I lowered the saturation, and it made it look a little less blown out. I then upped the contrast. The result (to me) is a cleaner picture that looks more like the person in real life. That being said, it IS all very subjective. This is how I like my portraits to be, but some people prefer their portraits to be blown out, or they like to make them WAY pink... and they look great because that is their style.

There is a saying... "One photo out of focus is a mistake, ten photos out of focus are an experimentation, one hundred photos out of focus are a style." :)

Here's what I did...
