Clouds

August 21st, 2011
Have seen amazing pics of clouds and I can never seem to get them. How do you "capture a cloud?" This is my attempt from today, the colours were so pretty but they just seem to fall flat?

Big F stop and underexposed is how I usually do skies.

B&W is usually how I get my most dramatic looking skies. You can up the contrast quite a bit and get some very stunning results.

I find it helpful to increase contrasts in cloud pictures to make them more dramatic

The best ones to photograph are either a) naturally heavy and dark on bottom, or b) have the sun directly behind them.

Here's an A:

Here's a B: (with iphone)

Here's one that is both:

You can see the EXIF on all 3 :)

i love taking photos of clouds :) i tend to increase the saturation and the contrast, and decrease the exposure, to make it all a bit more dramatic.

Hi Sarah, I'm a bit of a cloud stalker! You could try including something in addition to the skyline (i.e. hills, buildings, other silhouettes). Time of day and position of & to the sun important in getting shape v flat looking sky. And depending on which editing software you use try adjusting some of the controls (contrast, blacks, fill, etc) until you get a result that you're pleased with! Pretty colours that you've captured though and a great start! Sometimes soft and delicate is beautiful to!

I find cloud photos irresistable too! Here are a couple of mine -- and like others have said, I tend to play a bit with the contrast, and sometimes give them just a little bit of the "hdr-ish" treatment in Picnic:

These two are both three shot HDR merges

Dodge the highlights, burn the shadows or dark parts of the cloud, which bumps up the contrast.

Mine have a lot od post processing.

In Lightroom 3, I use the graduated filter to decrease the exposure on the clouds and bump up the clarity a few notches. And a curves layer. Always curves.
