I do not know the details, but in the first case I would like to see more details of the event. If the goal is to make portraits of the participants, then all is well. If the goal is to convey the atmosphere of the event - not enough dynamics and report IMHO
These are great. I wish I wouldn't have neglected my hobby while I was in the Corps. I think I have maybe 20 pictures from that time in my life; didn't take any from my time in Iraq.

And I think your photos are great. I like how you also zoomed in on smaller pieces of the photos such as the medals on the uniforms, the decorations on the tree etc. That's the sort of things i like to try and do to.
Happy belated birthday, just saw this post. Given the lighting I think the photos were processed well. Our lighting at the ball was brutal even the walls were peach which killed the photos more. Here's one of the few photos that turned out and there is a slight grain and blur. !
