I just had a neoprene camera strap for my slr, I got it off ebay for about £10. This is awesome, its so comfortable around my neck its elasticated in the strap so there is plenty of flex in the strap. When you are carrying around your slr for hours on end it realy digs into my neck. I have more neck pain now and i will bin my old original canon strap.
Does anybody else have this problem, if so iam glad to be of help?
I hate camera straps around the neck. I bought one that you wear cross-body (camera sits at your hip). It attachs to the camera via where you screw in a tripod. It's also got steel in the strap so it can't be cut off. I LOVE it. I can look up the brand and let you know what it is. It's the best!!!! I feel like I'm in a neckbrace when I where a strap around my neck. I don't like using a strap...period...but I also don't want to drop my camera.
Just realized you don't live in the states so not sure if you can get this particular brand but al least you can see it online and find something similar. I love it. Very comfortable and leaves you with plenty of room to maneuver when taking a shot.
I have the R Strap (RS-7 curve) by Black Rapids. It is the best! No neck pressure at all. The design allows for easy movement of the camera along the strap to quickly get the camera in position for shooting. Highly recommended. The Black Rapids website lists numerous dealers in the UK.
@simon0128 I find even the strap that comes with the camera can be worn across my body so the camera sits on my hip. It's much more comfortable that way and I just tuck my arm back through and swing it round when I want top take photos.
@wormentude - I tried this and it's just too "stringy" then cause I have to make the thinner parts of the strap much longer to fit right especially over a coat. Not so with the Sun Sniper. It's sturdy all the way to the camera.
I looked at the Black Rapid and don't like the fact that you have to attached it where the tripod goes. I don't want to have to take the strap off to be able to mount it on a tripod. Besides that, I make sure the strap is looped around my arm even when I'm mounting it on the tripod in case I drop it. I DO like that the camera is at your hip and an easily accessible. This one got good ratings on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/DLC-Carry-Speed-Camera-Strap/dp/B004G7RD6W/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&qid=1325181251&sr=8-23
@lisjam1 - I don't work that much with the tripod but, the times I have, I didnt find it a problem to pop the strap off. Will check out the link you posted. Always interested in options!
@lisjam1 - so that strap attaches just to the one little bar on the camera with the hook?? Not sure I'd feel that's all that secure and that it might be "wobbly"?? Do you have this strap?
I only use my BlackRapid one when I walk around with the camera for a while. If it's a shorter shoot, I am just using the noose, which I leave on all the time.
i've never found neck straps to be too fantastic. They're always in the way and the few times where i've put it around my neck, my camera / lens has hit a wall etc. So, what i do now is grip the camera and wrap the strap around my hand 2 or 3 times. This holds most of the weight on my wrist instead of my fingers and its right there at a moments notice so if anything intersting comes by, I can take a quick shot.
I've found that carrying the camera this way if pretty ok for 4-5 hours at a time
@toast Thanks Weng, this is what i do, i wrap my strap around my hand aswell. I think i am going to look into the Black Rapid having reading all these good comments.
What a great discussion, i knew i wasnt the only person with neck pain.
Thanks everyone
The main reason why I got rid of the neck strap was that it gets in the way when shooting on the tripod. BlackRapid is also great because of the adjustments, and you can very quickly get the camera to where you want it to be and be ready to shoot. Good for action shots and birds in flight, etc.
I guess the other reason I do this is because I travel (or try to) a bit... i've always found that in places where there's a potential to get pick pocketed / etc, having the camera in my hand with the strap around it gives me a closer connection / feel with my camera. If its around my neck, then its one more thing that I would have to think about / worry about, which may result in my wallet getting stolen. On my wrist, i dont have to think about it, I can tell if something happens so it doesnt take up any of my attention... Hope that makes sense in some way :)
I have one similar to the black rapids version but it was a lot cheaper - it also screws into the tripod screw - but there is a secondary screw if you will - so that you can leave the strap attached but still use a tripod.
Having the strap across body really takes the edge off the neck and has made an awful lot of difference for me.

@hamptanner i've been thinking of getting something like this. does this setup still cause the camera to bounce against your hip when you walk? that's the most annoying thing for me. after a few hours it becomes a bruise.
@scatochef I bought the Black Rapid RS-Sport before going on a trip to Paris and I rented the Canon 28-300L lens. I knew I would do a lot of walking for four days, which I did and lugging that heavy lens around with the new Black Rapid strap was not a problem at all. I found that I adjusted the strap so the camera would be right at my hip bone and I would almost always keep one hand on the camera to keep it from bouncing or swinging and to keep it from bumping into people of doors, etc. I can't imagine carrying that lens for 8 hours a day and walking miles and miles each day with the old camera strap. One more note... I found that pulling the camera up from my hip to shoot photos was every bit as easy and convenient as illustrated in the videos. I can whole-heartedly recommend this strap. And... I am not in any way affiliated with or getting anything from Black Rapid! I just think it is a must-have, can't-live-without item now.

but now I also have this

which is great, because along with this

it makes it easy to go between strap and tripod.
