No one ever really starts 'late', because it is a year in a life, not necessarily a calendar year. You will find as you get engrossed into this project that people will all of a sudden drop out or celebrate their completion in August. But yes, you can backdate your images, just means some people may miss them, if you post them all at once.

But, if you started on Jan 1st this year thinking "Alright, I'm gonna take one photo per day for the whole year" then yeah, backdate... its only a week. ;)

I started my project in September. There is really no late start. As long as you end up with a year in photos. It is yours have fun with it.

Like others stated, do whatever you want! :] I started my project April 1, 2011. There's no right or wrong, it's your project. :]

I started my first year of the project in July 2009. You can start whenever you want and can upload any pictures you want. :-)

I've been doing this for a year all by myself. Then I discovered this site, so I downloaded my entire last years folder.

I started Feb 3rd. It matters not!! BUT, if you finish your project on any date other than Dec 31st, you won't get lost in the hordes of peeps who finished theirs that day too and will end up with more congrats on your project. I guess I'm just an attention whore! ;-)
