I would really like to increase my photography skills, especially the technical aspects of photography and being a mum to littlies studying outside the home is not an option at the moment.
I would love to hear your recommendations for some really good, in-depth online courses. I would like to be able to go on to take photos in a professional capacity.
Long way to go but I would like to start at least learning more from home.
Thanks
I'm in the UK and interested in the same thing. Has anyone done an Open University photography course ? I have been checking into this, but strangely you can only do the course using a windows programme - I am a mac girl, so would have to run a windows programme via base camp or something, so additional expense...
I'm not a mum, but have restrictions with time so can only do a course online...(sorry to hijack your post Lisa, but there may be online course that can be done from anywhere??)
I tried New York Institute of Photography, which isnt bad. You have to be good at being disciplined and self taught is the only thing. Its cds and books and its not too expensive. I love the 10 courses I have had so far, but some of it seems outdated. They start out with learning your camera first, fstops, then aperture, lighting, lenses etc. They talk alot about the history of film cameras and developing 35mm etc in the beginning too. It works for me bc hubby is in Afghanistan and I have 3 kids at home and dont want to leave them. Its definately helped me but wish there was a bit more online action. You have projects due every packet and a multiple choice test. I love getting the critiques back. There are 3 levels to choose from and one includes the business aspect of running your own business.
@Sharon, a friend has just started a photography course with the Open College of the Arts in the UK, http://www.oca-uk.com/ - she seems impressed so far (not done much!)
One thing that she did like was that you odn't have to decide if you want to do the full degree until you've got toward the end of the first module; and, apparently, they're pretty honest with you as to whether or not they think it's reasonable for you to try.
Have you looked at KelbyTraining.com? While they are not an official course, they go through all the aspects of photography and for only $15 a month well worth the $$$
i personally have learned a lot from them and still do everyday. when I signed up I also signed up to be a NAPP member (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) as you get a discount, but you have to be into Photoshop to get the benefit from being a NAPP member.
I just signed up for NYIP. Im still waiting to get my first course in. I was always seeing adverts for NYIP in the photography magazine I read and looked up the website requested more info and enrolled in the professional photography course. I know some things about photography but I want to learn more and i like how the professional course has some business aspects in it.
Its is and its not expensive. You get your next set of classes after each 2nd pymt, so what I do is pay for 2 at a time, so I get the next set. You work at your own pace too.If you decide its not for you, you can cancel anytime. I hope you like it. We are learning now about b&w photog, film cameras, filters, aperture and something else. I am on the second set of the program. Mine is the larger program that teaches the business aspect too. Good luck and let me know if you need any help!
@racedoug33 I know there are different levels to the type of courses. I am doing the bigger one to get the certificate in photog but there is a smaller program for just digital. I pay $45 per month and I think mine is $900. I hope that one day you will be able too.
The NYIP of photography does look thorough and similar to thephotographyinstitute.com.au - what bothers me is the accreditation. NYIP holds no accreditation in Australia and the latter is not accredited at all. Anyone know of any accredited courses in Australia???
@picme I'm going to start on it this weekend. I have been busy the last few days. I figure the weekend I will be able to have more down time to get crackin on it.

@sharonaddison @mummarazzii @la_photographic @emmadw @herussell @ozziehoffy
I think I will sign up to that one, it looks like quite a comprehensive course.
