Just and Observation

January 21st, 2012
Over the past week couple of days, when I log onto 365 the top two discussions are the hate thread and the love thread. I find it "interesting" that the hate thread is always on top. Honestly, it says a lot about human nature's tendency to want to focus on negativity instead of positivity. It is a little disheartening to me that more time is spent on discussing negative feelings than positive feelings. Maybe people will be irritated with me for saying this, but it just seems that maybe as humans we all need to look at the positive side of things a little more. It's very easy to show and express irritation, frustration, anger, etc. Turning things around and looking for those things that are positive takes a little more thought and creativity. It works your brain muscles more.

OK, I'm sure the blasting will begin. I have one request before you contradict me, ask why is it necessary to contradict me and what are the true motivations for doing so?

I'm not going to criticize you - at all. It is an interesting observation. But, to be honest - I'm tired of looking at both of the threads and wish something else more interesting would come along and bump them out of the top spots. No offense to either of the OP's of said posts, but it's a little too much drama for me to stomach and peeps are taking things WAY out of context. I'm just sad the fav fav of another person's work thread got buried almost immediately again:(

And on that note - here's the Fav fav thread - let's get that back into the Hot Topics, where it should be!

@pwallis Yes, I agree about more interesting. I prefer the challenge threads. I like those a lot.
January 21st, 2012
Exactly:) And all things PHOTOGRAPHY related. I know those threads started out as such, but they seem to have degenerated into something else altogether.

@pwallis thanks for posting the link o_O

@crickle1969 I agree. I read it the first day, but never looked at it again. This is about our projects and others work that we like, not what we hate about them. I am tired of seeing both as well at the top. Lets make a change and find something else to make HOT!
January 21st, 2012
You could always start a topic like, "Post your naked photography!" That subject always seems to zoom to the top of the Hot Topic threads, lol
January 21st, 2012
@clarissajohal You I like ;)
January 21st, 2012
@crickle1969 and I'm being completely sarcastic. I'm not a fan of hate threads at all--even if they're not meant to be taken seriously. Kind of brings down the whole site and scares away new photographers.
January 21st, 2012
I won't contradict you in the slightest - everyone is utterly entitled to their opinion, whether it's love, hate, or everything in between. I'm just not sure that the best approach to encouraging those discussions to die down was to start yet another thread that discusses the threads. Rather breathes new life into something that may have been winding down already of its own accord.

I agree with @pwallis - let's all get back to some good ole photography related discussions! :)

Simple answer: it's easier.

Longer analysis: it's easier to fall into a pattern of being bored with seeing (which mostly will translate readily into "not liking") the same things over and again the more time you spend in a given arena. Not a blanket truth, but often enough the case.

Consider when someone first discovers photography (or anything, actually); HDR is exciting, rings making heart-shaped shadows in open book spines is exciting, cross-processed boring photos with poignant-but-vapid bullshit in Helvetica on them are exciting, black and white photos of American flags with colour-popped flowers (bearing a single tear drop from a crying bald eagle, naturally) in front of them are exciting... it's a whole new world of discovery.

Time progresses however and repeated exposure to the same, or similar, things numbs and bores one to and with them. Of course, it doesn't with everyone, but it's mostly true that the excitement lessens with each exposure, or with repeated exposure.

So it's possible to observe that with time it's easier to find more things you've already seen, and harder to find new things you haven't. This isn't just true of photography or other art forms but in the general (note: general) observation made by Douglas Adams (pbuh).

So, y'know. Stuff, and that.

@crickle1969 hey I'm sorry if I touched a nerve, but why have a go at me for pointing out multiple threads on the same subject? I wasn't spreading 'hate' or having a go!
You hadn't even posted at that time I really don't understand why I got blasted.

Come on can't we have differences of opinion without having a go at each other on here?
January 21st, 2012
P.S. This also explains the lessening of the comments/interest one receives with time.

@pete21 This is why we can't have nice things.

No babies, no pets, animals, flowers, no vignettes, pregnancy, dolls, toys,hdr, no photoshop, watermarks, bokeh, birds, no pictures straight out of the camera, food, rainbows, insects... so on..what then? Pretty much everything imaginable is listed. I was under the impression some people were doing this to learn more skills. When a new person comes along and has never heard of bokeh, why would they attempt it or try it if they think it's hated, or HDR, is it not worth doing because these people actually hate it?
The haters are loose! lol
Never liked to think of photographers as being the hating type, but it takes all kinds, and some are far too good and advanced for the majority.

Off to find leprechauns and intangible ideas for the day hehehe
January 21st, 2012
not to put a damper on it, because i know you're making a wider point than this.. but the reason the "hate" thread is above the "love" thread in the sidebar is because it was created first, not because more people are participating in it. Although maybe i could reorder the "hot topics" based on # replies, but yeah, at the moment it's hot topics ordered chronologically.

@Scrivna Blast it! Another good conspiracy theory, down the tubes. ;)
January 21st, 2012
Doctor What? is right. People get bored with themselves and the world around them so they start stirring the pot for some excitement. Reading the thread brings nothing helpful. It's a place those posting can share in their misery. They are in the minority because all those types of pictures are on the popular page and the homepages because people like them. People talk about them, people FAV them. The thread in no way diminishes the value of those who post those pictures. Besides, who cares? It your project to do with as you wish. You will get nowhere if you lsiten to it. If you post an opposing opinion, you will only keep the fire flamed. Let it run it's course and die out because it will.
January 21st, 2012
@binny - Ha! Totally agree - and am looking forward to seeing that leprechaun pic!
January 21st, 2012
Well I took the hate thread as mostly being tongue in cheek and posted as such, also there are at least two contributers who are getting a bill for cleaning the coffee off my moniter!!!!

@Scrivna just a stupid idea but bare with me, the written word is open to interpritation and without seeing body language or hearing the tone used it is easy to misintererate a posts meaning. Maybe the use of smilies could help? As I said a bit of a stupid idea but........... I dunno what do people think?
January 21st, 2012
@clarissajohal you made me laugh
January 21st, 2012
@pete21 --- Like this? ;-)
January 21st, 2012
@clarissajohal u made me laugh
January 21st, 2012
@dmortega Oh YES, YES, YES, damn another coffee gone over ;-)
January 21st, 2012
I thought the hate thread was quite interesting, to give me an idea of people's tastes. I took it with a pinch of salt, because I can't really imagine anyone has strong feelings of hatred about photographs that other people take for their own pleasure! But even if they did, it makes no difference to me if random people hate my photos! :-)
January 21st, 2012
I think a lot of the replies for the hate thread were against it and basically letting others know not to listen to the opinions reflected in the bag.
January 21st, 2012
@pwallis tell me about it. I almost want to scream Shut Up and take some photos, after criticizing my own photos I was pointed out and I really just want to see the fav fav or the Fav Black and White again.
http://365project.org/discuss/general/10512/your-favorite-photo-of-somebody-else-week-of-january-14th-to-january-20th

@scrivna once again thank you for offering a great site where we can post our photos and either get compliments or critique and are able to voice our own opinions within the extent of good taste.
January 21st, 2012
@pwallis I will be starting eight threads right now all about photography
