Exif data

January 31st, 2012
The last few photos I've uploaded have all lost their exif data. I use CS5 and lately been saving for web and devices so to try and keep the colours right when uploading here. Is this why I'm losing the data? Is there a way to save the data? Don't like uploading without the data on them.

As you save to web you will notice a box about EXIF data....I'm guessing yours is clicked to 'none'......you can switch this as you save it :) hope this helps :)

Just looked at CS4 and Save to Web appears to default to 'None' for EXIF data. on CS4 there is a drop down box on the right in the first window with the word 'none' in it. I always reduce file size to reduce risk of stealing, then Save to Web which is why my EXIF never appears on my shots. how this helped Kirsty :)

@natdurell Where is the box? I was looking but couldn't see it. SOmetimes I'm just so blind, lol. I also save my pictures normally as save as, haven't uploaded one here yet so not sure if the exif data is on them but I find I get colour loss when uploading them so prefer uploading save to web pics.

Oh dear....I'm working with CS4 so unsure if things are different in CS5..... When I click Save to Web a menu box appears and on the right hand side there is reference to either EXIF or metadata?....forgive me as not in office, in bed with iPad now so can't check CS4! Lol the should be the word 'none'?.....let me know x

@natdurell Ok, will have a looksy later when I have it back on. I never used save to web on CS4 so don't know if it's different but I'm sure there must be something. Thanks

@kirstymcl I'm 99% sure that saving for web strips EXIF data, whereas normal Save As JPEG keeps the EXIF data... I know because that's how I save my photos! :) My guess is that both Save For Web and Save As keep the resolution at 72 dpi... so not much difference really. If I were you I'd use the normal Save As. :)

@kirstymcl Also, it doesn't matter if you Save As or Save For Web, because when you upload it to 365, the file gets compressed anyway, reducing the quality slightly so it can save more server space.

@kirstymcl I used to do save for web, switched to Save As once folks here pointed out to me that's how I was losing my exif. Most of my uploads are under 150K.

Totally agree with @pocketmouse ^^^

I use Save As, instead of Save for Web to get around this...

@pocketmouse @neda @hmgphotos

Thanks. I think I will from now on. I suppose everything is trial and error anyway but it is a pain as I've been saving both for each photo I edit so would save space on my drive if I stopped doing that.

If you want, you can go to File>File Info and punch in your name, your website and any other day you want. It'll be saved with the image so someone else can look it up as well. Just another way to add data, if you'd like. I just upload hi-res files. They're usually 5-6mb.
