Help

Let me start by saying 365 is an awesome website and this project has taught me alot. You have all wecomed me in like a family. I have been approched by a few local bands in the Seattle area that are interested in a photo from my Nightmare series that I have been shooting the last couple of days. They are small bands, so not a giant bank roll. They would like to use my photo for an album cover. How much should I ask for the image for say a one time use and how much for all of the rights. Any help in this would be great as I am new to selling anything outside of the Studio.

I would start off with. how much would you be happy with, knowing what they want to use it for?

I am thinking $500 for use on a CD Cover. Does that sound fair?

I think that sounds fair but more importantly sell them the specific use and in WRITING, don't sell the copyright.......they may be small now but if they become the next U2 or Pink Floyd you may kick yourself! lol

I know coming up with a figure must be scary as I too would be dead chuffed and proud to be asked :)

Well done you :)

In more constructive news: $500 sounds high to me, but then it really does depend on their budget, really. If nobody else who's ever sold stuff in this way replies, maybe consider how much time/effort it'd take for you to create the photo if they'd commissioned it, decide on a reasonable hourly rate for your time, and arrive at a figure that way?

P.S. I build websites and web-based business management systems freelance (from time to time) and this is how I figure my charges.

I've looked into this for you Michael and here's the key thing....BEFORE you talk turkey ask how many CDs are being created on the first run.....quote a price according to how many as it may be as few as 100....then have in writing that if a bigger record company picks them up then they will pay a larger repeat fee as they will then be printing 1000s rather than a few hundred. Get everything written down and signed. If they are just creating a few CDs it is your right as the artist to charge a nominal fee and enjoy the kudos of having the image on a CD on your shelf (I would!). Just cover yourself should they make it big :)
