Woo! My 85mm 1.8 just arrived. It's not the "L"--some day perhaps! What is it about the 85 mm that you love?! What is it you hate? What have you learned about that lens that you can share? Show me your favorite portrait taken with it? I envision using it for my senior shoots, personally!
The 85mm f/1.8 is possibly the best portrait lens for shooting kids. Because they move so fast! The f/1.2 just doesn't focus quickly enough at times. I've considered adding the f/1.8 to my bag, just for child shoots! You will love that lens!
I have nothing bad to say about 85mm. Nothing. For me, it is perfect.
What have I learned? It is unforgiving. You have to nail the focus. It is super-sharp, so you can shoot wide open, but it is crazy sharp if you stop down just a little (this applies to the L and non-L versions). F/2.2 is just about perfect for subject isolation while still keeping plenty of facial detail for close-ups.
And for senior shoots? It is the lens.
I think people get sick of me talking about how much I love the 85...
I have not found one thing that I hate yet about my 85mm! I love that lens!!!!! I got it for Christmas and I can't wait for warmer weather to just get out and use it a LOT!
@terek55 - thank you! I think you are really going to love it. It's a sharp and quick lens. I was thinking about it some more and the only thing that I had an issue with (and it's not really a problem, it's just more of a getting used to issue, is that you do need room for this lens.
@terek55 - I just read where you live! It's a beautiful area over there. I'm just two hours up 81 from you. On the WV/MD boarder (live right next to the potomac).
@terek55 - anytime! I love going on photo day trips! If you are ever going to be up this way, let me know. Same if I head down your way. Once it warms up, I will be heading down to Luray - one of my favorite places to shoot. That area is gorgeous. Will also head up to Skyline as well.
@jenp I'm very close to Luray b/c I live in Greene County -- maybe 6 miles from Skyline Drive. I've never been to where you live ... seriously let me know! totalhokie96@gmail.com -- any time :)
