Help, birthday cake shot!

March 4th, 2012
It's my sons birthday and I want to get a nice shot of him later blowing out his candles. How should I have my settings so I can get a clear blur free picture (not easy with a fast moving toddler at the best of times!) but I don't want to use the flash and ruin the ambiance. I'm using a Canon EOS 450D.

Here are a couple I've taken of my oldest and youngest although I'm not sure this is the sort of shot you're after :o)

Both were using an ISO of 400 and f-stop of 5.6

Here are the settings I've used for Birthday shots

Exposure: 0.04 sec (1/25)
Aperture: f/11.0
ISO Speed: 1600
Focal Length: 50 mm

(High ISO as the restaurant was quite dark and I didn't want to over ride the candles by using flash)

Exposure: 0.0167 sec (1/60)
Aperture:f/4.0
ISO Speed: 400
Focal Length: 27 mm

This was taken with similar settings to above (exif not on the collage) taken in burst mode with no flash

Exposure: 0.05 sec (10/200)
Aperture: f/2.8
ISO Speed: 400
Actually I think I cheated and used the candlelight setting on my camera ;)

I had my husband sit in for a practice run first, but with only the candle light and dark outside, I used the following settings:

Exposure 1/80
f/2.8
ISO 1600
45mm (was shooting in a tight space)

Good luck and have fun!
