(IYO) What's the best mini/compact tripod for travel?

March 5th, 2012
I am headed to Maui and want to purchase a nice sturdy tripod, that is also light in wieght and compact for travel purposes. We will be doing lots of exploring and hiking. I have a Nikon D3100. Can anyone give me some good info. THX!

I was just admiring/drooling over my friend's manfrotto tripod that he uses for travel. After spending waaay too much on mine (which I still love, because it's ultra sturdy and my last one wasn't) I'm still kicking myself that I didn't just buy a manfrotto.

I have an induro travel tripod which is light but not small. All I can say on the really small ones is that the gorilla pod sucks a big one.

Also do not forget the tripod head. I wanted lighter so I actually do not have the panning ability, but I had to go on weight versus flexibility.

I really like this. Light and sturdy as long as its not at full height in the wind. Not too expensive either.

There is always The String Tripod. Not instead of, but in addition to a tripod. Especially for those places which do not allow tripods or monopods.

I have a slik print pro ii which I have taken on lots of walks. It's a ball head which means no handles to lose or get in the way ..and oh it's rather light compared to my husbands hefty manfrotto ;-)

good luck with your tripod hunt and enjoy your trip :-)

@crimper_chun I prefer the Steadepod http://www.amazon.co.uk/SteadePod-Camera-Stabiliser-Tripod-Pocket/dp/B003D5YJ8S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330985838&sr=8-1
It's very portable and does the same job (although still not as good as a tripod like you said)

@jakewalton4 oh that is VERY portable! ;-)

When I was in Maui I mainly used my gorilla pod. I bought a off brand ball head attachment to make composition easier. The only draw back is limited height and lots of low angle shots

@shirljess I'm just curious what you went with? I will be going on a cruise in the fall and will want to bring something to pack in my suitcase. I am VERY tight with money so hundreds of dollars is out of the question.

@myhrhelper Hey there, you know what, I did not take one at all on our trip to Maui, due to room in my suitcase and the weight restrictins set by the airlines. I was able to get tons of great shots without one though. ck out tag, mauijess in the search field. I have learned how to take pretty good bracketed photos for HDR just by doing hand held. The only thing I would really wnat to have a tripod along for would be long exposure shots like water blur, star trails and car light trails, I was able to take a tripod on our most resent trip to Palm Springs/ La Quinta, CA to see those pics use tag laquintajess. This tripod was just my old crappy aluminum one and since I would not need to pack it on hikes it worked for what I needed. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

@shirljess No that is good advice, maybe I really don't need one. I saw your Maui pic's oh how beautiful! Did you go on a cruise or just stay there?
I'm going on a short Norwegian Cruise Line trip to the Bahama's.

I never use tripods and because of the camera challenge I had to learn how to use one last night lol. (long exposure night shot). That made me think I might want one on my trip but it would probably be better without one. I just wondered if there was something that is light weight that collapses very small.

@myhrhelper We flew, you will have a blast on your cruise.
