Should I put quote in photo or not

March 6th, 2012
Our local camera club has a contest every month and this time it is "poem, song or book" and the photo can have a couple of lines read with the photo. I can't decide weather or not to put the quote into the picture or to just read it along with. I like the look of quotes in pictures, I think the text adds a little something. But purely from a photography perspecitve maybe the judges won't agree. I know you guys have alot more experience than I do so, tell me: What do you think?

Thanks!

This was one of my first tries at putting a quote in a picture. I'm not sure how great it is but it was fun. Maybe you could post ideas in this thread and ask for a vote? Just to see what others think?

I agree with Amanda. The typography is extremely important.

depends what the photo is :) I put quotes on mine sometimes, and sometimes I just put the quote as the description. Can you share the photo with us?

Here's an example of mine - one of each. Sometimes it just feels right with the words on it, and sometimes it doesn't. :)

@sdpace Woweee, that second photo is really amazing. The small block text is great with the low perspective.

@echoia thank you, Madam. I usually just use a block text (it is Orator Standard) because it seems unobtrusive and direct at the same time. :)

You could write it out on a piece of paper, make it look more artistic-like, and take a photo of that :)

I really like the way @sdpace integrated the text into her 2nd picture, so it formed part of the composition. I also agree that it works with some pictures better than others and that the font, scale and placement of the text are all vital to consider as part of the overall composition.

I think quotes in photos is dire... dreadful and a bag of rubbish. But that is just my opinion. If the photo is good enough, it doesn't need the words rammed down one's throat. I would present the photo and read out the quote. And make sure the words and the photo relate to each other.

you could always go down the motivational poster kind of route and put your words in a border at the bottom of the photo so it doesn't take away from the pic as a whole, personally if I was entering the competition I would leave the words off, you can never tell if the judges will like typeface on pictures

Here are some of the pictures that I am considering entereing, or maybe something like it. For these examples I have the text in the photo.

@asrai @bobfoto @jenirainbow @pocketmouse @sdpace @echoia @mandyj92 Thanks everyone for you coments and the examples. Of my 3 examples above, my favorite picture is the 1st one and probably would enter that one if I don't come up with a better idea before then! @bobfoto I probably wouldn't even consider putting a quote in the picture for a competition except for the category itself. It sounds like the safe bet would be to follow @asrai suggestion of putting it below, if I include it at all.

no

Funny thing, none of our opinions here matter. In most any contest there is a HUGE subjective factor in the judges. For what it is worth my opinion is, if one adds text to an image, the image determines placement. The text should be an element of the image rather than stuck onto the image. @sdpace second photo is a really good example.

@grecican @lilbudhha Thanks for the comments. I agree that the text in @sdpace example is super. I am going to leave the text out. Now I just have to figure out what picture to use and what quote to go with it!

@bobfoto I agree. I think it ruins the photo.
March 6th, 2012
Don't do it.

I don't do a lot of text in pics myself.. I have two in my project (correct me if I'm wrong) just showing one...

@elke I like your example alot. I guess it's a matter of weather it fits or not.

For a contest, no, I would not do it. It depends on what the contest is about really and who is judging. There may be a standard that they are looking for and things that they are looking for that may get the photo thrown out.

So, for a contest, no, I wouldn't.

Good Luck with what you decide! :-)
