making event photography interesting

How do you photographers make event photography interesting? Especially when you are confined to one spot because of a lot of people or at seated events.

There's a lot of answers to this. Not sure exactly what you mean by "event". If it's an outdoor concert where first come, first seated I arrive VERY early. Even if it means staking out my claim by sitting in one spot for hours if the end result if choosing the best spot to shoot from.

If you could define "event" for me I could offer more advice.

This came about with a poetry event that I shot where I didn't have any movement. I was indoor and I was stuck in one chiar for the whole event. I got profile shots of everyone that performed but as I edit them now I find they are really boring.

It would be nice to make events like that a little bit more interesting. @cromwell

You could ask the promoters in advance if you could have access to shoot this event for them. Promise to burn them a disc at a later date in which they may use for future promotion. All you ask is a photo credit. A lot of times they are flattered by this and will be most accomodating, plus you'll get your work out there!

If you don't mind telling them a little white lie, you could say your freelancing for a local newspaper and were sent to cover this event. This works on smaller events. Big time ones are gonna ask for credentials.

If you ARE stuck in a seat all I can say is get there early enough to pick out a good one. Bring a wide angle and zoom lens if you have both so you can get a variety of shots.

Hope that helps some.

You mention all you got are profile images. They never looked in your direction, at any time?
Or maybe taken some shots while they were being introduced, or taking the stage, or some other candid opportunity. Something that might have shown a little of the person's personality, facial expressions perhaps.
