Photoshop 6 v Lightroom 4

May 23rd, 2012
I am still lucky enough to have student status so I can buy both of the above at a much reduced cost.

I have been using the beta of Photoshop CS6 for photo editing but it has now expired so I need to decide which one to buy.

I also downloaded the beta trial of Lightroom 4 but didn't really use it before it expired so I can't trial it again!

So which one would you recommend if you have used both? Lightroom is a 1/3rd of the cost of Photoshop 6 & I won't be doing anything other than photo editing so is Photoshop worth the extra money?

I would appreciate your feedback!

Thanks in advance,
Zoe

Go with Lightroom 4 and search for the extra free presets online.

But if you are interested... buying PS and LR together you get Lightroom at a discounted price.

If I had to pick one, it would be LR hands down.... I now do most of my post just using LR 4 and matched with the ability to arrange my photos I could not live without it....

Now having said that if you can get student prices for PS then get it while/if you can but only if you get LR first. :)

I love Lightroom...but you can do more with Photoshop if you like more artistic results.

All good interesting stuff, but if you want (IMHO) a really good article that describes in detail the comparative functions of each, try this :

I use both, his views are spot on for me.

Thanks everyone for the replies!

I read the article that @ellida posted and as I do stitching with panoramics and lots of tidying up/cloning/removing on a lot of images, I think I will go with Photoshop which I already know and have used extensively in CS4.

But I do agree with @agima and at some point I think I will invest in LR too .... before my student status expires!

Download both for free and if you really one or both buy them. They can't really be compared with each other as they're two different types of editing software. Lightroom is solely a RAW editor and is okay for general editing but if you want to do more specific things to your photos you're gonna need Photoshop. I use both(Lightroom more so as I usually just do small tweaks) but if I had to choose one it would be Photoshop as you can do anything with the only limiting factor your imagination. You will have to put a bit more effort into learning Photoshop though.

I feel like this topic comes up here often. They serve different purposes. Lightroom is an organizational tool and is especially helpful for batch processing. Photoshop does all the editing you can do in Lightroom plus about a billion things. I couldn't live without either.

Buy LR4 and learn it right through, at least the parts you will use everyday. Then buy Elements10.which will give you basic layers etc, essential for compositing. Professionals say they do 85% of their editing in LR4 and the remaining 15% CS6 but they are doing very advanced compositing.
Good luck!

@galycett There is much more going on than compositing for that 15%. I use it most often for skin softening, cloning, spot healing, and blending layers for lighting effects.
