A Photography Club at the school

May 31st, 2012
Hi guys!

After working for more than eight years, I have finally decided to go back to school and take a Bachelor's degree in Communication Arts. I think that we must always value continuing education. :D

I couldn't be more excited to tell you that Photography is one of my subjects! Just how cool is that?!?

What's interesting is that there is no Photography Club at the school yet and so I am seriously thinking about setting up one. My questions now are: what do you think must be done to encourage members to join and has anyone of you here already set up their own local clubs, what were the general rules? I think that contests and exhibits may encourage interested parties to join but what other activities may also be done?

Thanks and God bless us all! :D

I joined this group which I found on meetup.com. They meet for photo outings and critiquing and special photography related events. I highly recommend checking out the site to see what this group is actively doing. You should get a lot of good ideas. http://www.meetup.com/Seattle-Photography-Club/

I've joined and ran clubs and something to keep in mind is how much participation are you, yourself, willing to put into it? As a club leader, you are expected to lead. That means attending all the functions you put together. If your time is limited, think about sharing responsibilities with several people so if you have to miss something, it won't be a problem with others.

It also takes time to find the right people. This can be discouraging
if schedules conflict or ideas on how to do things conflict. People will be flaky and not be reliable. Again, if you start this, how much commitment are you willing to give?

If you think this is something you'd like to pursue, think about will this be for school projects only? Would you gear it around your photography class? What happens when you are done with the class?
Will the club continue if you are no longer in school?

I know, lots to think about but if you don't you may just be frustrated and give up. I think it's a great idea and hope you can find a way to make it work for you either in school or out of school. Good luck!

Thanks @dmortega. I plan to teach in the same university when I graduate and so I'm positive that this would be a long-term commitment. :D
