I'm wondering if anyone can suggest some books on editing that are based on achieving effects, rather than learning how to do specific technical things... You know, like Jeff Revell's "from snapshots to great shots" books, only for editing? I've been reading thru the descriptions and reviews of various books on amazon, but it's hard to tell from the description whether they take this approach or not...
My honest opinion is to just get in there and click. See what happens and learn. Even if you get a book, it will give you a clue but you can figure out what is happening by trying different things. Also, there is so much on the internet, I've found my books are not as helpful as I'd like because I've already learned the simple techniques. Learn the basics and then google for more help.
I bought a book as I had never used PS before and to be honest I am learning as I go along - found the book more complicated even though its called 'Photoshop Elements 10 for Dummies'!! I just play around and learn something new each time.
It's sections are all task based. Here's a couple of examples:
- fixing areas that are too bright
- removing dark circles under eyes
- cloning away distractions
- basic sharpening
It's not a book to read cover to cover...use it more like a dictionary. Got a specific problem with a photo? Look it up and have a go at fixing it. Very practical.
