cropping question

July 31st, 2010
I crop almost every photo, of course, but when I go to print them they sometimes don't fit on the photo paper. Like if I send them to a store to get printed. How do you make sure your demensions are printable and will turn out the way you want them too?? I hope this question makes sense!

My photo editing software has a feature on the crop to show you what size you're cropping to - I nearly always crop to 4x6 cause if I'm going to print, thats usually what size I'll get. If I know I'm going to do enlargements, I'll do 5x7 or 8x10, etc crops to be sure it all fits and prints appropriately. HTH!

yes that helps!! i saw that and was going to try it for the next pictures. so if you crop it where it will fit and look right for 8X10 then will it look good if you print it in a 5X7 or 4X6....etc??

I used to crop almost every photo, but realised that if I kept cropping I'm not going to be able to print some of them. More importantly, I was becoming over-reliant on composing my images post-shoot and soon realised that I needed to become better at composing whilst I actually take the photo (obvious I suppose). My more recent photos haven't been cropped at all.

I say this because I think you should try and take the photo as you want them to be developed, as it will improve your general photographic skills. Composing as you take the picture is an important but basic photography skill :)

I crop mine in PSP X2....it gives you the option to crop to standard sizes....3x4, 4x6, 5x7, 8x10, etc. No problems printing !

It's called "Crop Aspect Ratio",..you are going to have to decide what size print you want for each picture and then crop accordingly. Which usually means that you will have to allow extra space in the photo when you take it to be able to crop in post processing. Most software will allow you to choose or set the size yourself. Here's a link I think will be of intrest to you!
