How many photos can an SD card hold?

June 19th, 2012
The camera is 14megapixels and I'm not sure whether or not to get an 8gb or 16gb SD card. Also, is there any way anyone can show me how you work it out? I would appreciate both for RAW and jpeg as I'm not sure which one I shall shoot it.

Other question... how do I find out which size UV filter I need? I'd like to order the filter, SD card and the camera at the same time so I won't have the lens with me to measure etc.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate all the help I have had from all of you. Hopefully there will be no more questions as I should have my camera in a little over a week!

depends on the format you store the photos, you wil fit less Raw images on the card than Jpeg also depends on the resolution you use to take the images rough guestimate for 8gb is probably anything from 500 to 1000 shots to find the size of the filter I would google the specifications of the camera that you want to buy it will tell you on there what size lenses it takes

My camera is an 18megapixel camera and I shoot with 8gb cards on RAW and i can get up to 400 photos on it.

Hi, my 8mb San disk extreme pro (bought from Amazon, great price) holds approx 400 RAW files/shots.
For the filter it depends on the size of the lens, I have 52mm or 56mm, so just look up which lens you have. Hope that helps a bit : )

It depends on the exact camera, and the settings in use (both JPEG and RAW files are compressed, so simple scenes such as a totally black photo will take up minimal space, whereas scenes taken at high ISO with a lot of noise will take up a lot of space).

As a rough ballpark, on a 8GB card, you should get approximately 450 RAW files or around 1200 JPEG files. On a 16GB card, you would get double that (900 RAW, 2400 JPEG).

You may find 2x 8GB cards is more useful than 1x 16GB card -- for example, if you are away for a while and lose or damage a card, you have another card you can use.

Filter size is usually stated on the very end of your lens in millimeters.

Depends... a lot :) I shoot in RAW and each file is 24mb. I use large cards ~64gb~ to deal with the size and number of shots I take. Your question regarding RAW versus jpeg is a good one. I would recommend getting used to shooting in RAW because it gives you the ability to make adjustments later, specifically color adjustments, in programs like Lightroom. You'll need to use a program to import RAW files like lightroom or the one that comes with the camera. The downside is the files are larger and you have to convert them to jpeg before posting to sites like this or facebook. Some cameras allow you to save both at the time of the picture is taken. This is good but leads to yet more file space being consumed on the card. Given the price of memory today, I'd get a 32gb minimum. I just got another 32gb for $15.99.

@sobefree 14 MB will give you around 930 RAW only images on a 16 Gb card, if you are going to shoot vidoe I would say 16 Gb or 32 Gb card, I use 2 x 16 Gb cards and never fill one up before I get to upload them but I do rotate them unless its been a video.

AS for your filter size it will tell you the screw size on the lens in mm.

Just a tip purchase the best card if possible something like the Sandisk Extreme pro SDXC card and take advantage of the free recovery software and the liftime warranty, oh the are temperature proof, water proof, shock proof, and x-ray proof :)
