Help with my workflow - iPhoto/PSE10/other ideas?

August 22nd, 2012
Hi all,

I have been using PSE for several years now, currently using PSE 10. I import my RAW image files using Organizer, as I find it quite clean to import and save any versions with the original in an image set.

Last year I switched from PC to Mac, and I started fiddling with iPhoto. I imported about 100GB worth of photos before I realised that importing photos from my HD into iPhoto duplicates them. With 35,000 images on my computer I am just about out of space.

I really like iPhoto as an organisational tool, but I'm pretty much married to the idea of using PSE as my editing tool. I have worked out how to edit photos in PSE while organising in iPhoto, but this only works well for JPEGs I find as you need to save as the same file type for the photo to update in iPhoto.

I wonder if anyone has any suggestions to improve my workflow so that I'm not duplicating files, and I'm working as seamlessly / with as few steps or clicks as possible?

And if the answer is to stop using iPhoto, does anyone know how to get rid of the 100GB worth of duplicate files I have imported?

Thanks!

Oh timely topic....I am in the process of moving all my photos to an external hard drive in PSE10. I am running out of room and while I also love the simplicity of iPhoto, it doesn't do all that I want and I don't have room for duplicates.
You could use an external hard drive and just keep your iPhoto library on your computer.

You can change the default for editing in iPhoto to PSE if that helps. Go under preferences and the select PSE under the edit photo option. I'm not that up on iPhoto because I feel Photoshop makes iPhoto seem like a toy. No disrespect to iPhoto. I don't like how iPhoto stashes your photo in a seemingly hidden folder, but it is there and you can delete them. I think you can also drag them into the trash bit right in iPhoto too. but, I'd hate for you to lose everything. But, I' pretty sure that works if you want to totally delete them from iphoto
