SIGNATURE HELP

August 26th, 2012
Hello fellow 365ers.
First off HAPPY BANK HOLIDAY ALL!!!
I need some help. I see some people have these wonderful signatures that they put on there work and I am looking for some inspiration on what to put on mine and also how do they do it.
Is it done through a program like photoshop or something they have had done by a company.

I have a facebook group called SIMTOGRAPHY so not sure if to use that or just my initails or Simmy Pics

Would love to hear your ideas and advice on how i make one up.
Thanks Guys

I don't like them! My personal feeling is that they distract the eye from the photo :)

They are added in post-processing, but personally, unless they are very discreet I'm unconvinced - it's to stop people stealing images, in theory

I'm not a fan either...I would only get one if I was selling my photos.
Its very easy usually to photoshop a watermark out of a photo and the pictures on here are too small to do much with so its not much protection aginst theft.
If you really want one you could just put it on in picmonkey, you dont need photoshop.

I like them :o) I consider it part of the processing process which I really enjoy. Very rarely do I post a pic that hasn't been fiddled with. For me it's nothing to do with whether anyone is going to steal my images...I don't consider them worth stealing! It's just a part of the editing. In a previous thread regarding this very subject I think a comment from @timandelke summed it up for me. She said she's always signed her name on her work from a very young age so why stop now. I agree with her. If you do want to do it Simmy then I say why not, go ahead. I use ribbet or picmonkey for mine but you can always use picasa or gimp or photoshop or any number of other sites or programmes.

@psychographer What a memory you have! You quoted me verbatim! Everyone has their own reasons for using a watermark - if you want to do it, go ahead. I try to keep mine as simple as possible and at about 20% opacity, so as not to distract from the image.

@timandelke @psychographer @shannew @monika64 @boogie thanks for your comments guys great to have various vies on what people think going to put some on as practise first see if I like or if it does cause a distraction and take it from there. I never have a prob with anyone using a pic, just would hope they would be honest enough to say who they got it from.

@psychographer yours are discreet and those signatures don't worry me, but some people produce really heavy watermarks. One picture I saw recently the watermark had been deliberately placed over the most interesting part of the photograph, rather than tucked in a corner as a signature. The reason given was that the person didn't want the picture stolen - I didn't have the heart to tell them that I'd seen better of the same thing done by others.

@timandelke I wish I had your confidence when I'm in exams ;o) I love your watermark Elke and like you say it's discreet. I always fade mine down too but it depends on the photo whether it's more prominent or not.

@shannew Awwww, bless you Shanne. I have been known to put mine splat in the middle of a pic but usually when there's loads of negative space.

@simster If you look through my past shots Simmy you'll notice that I've changed mine a lot. I used to use psychographer but now use PJOTOGRAPHYbylisapouncy...I'm sure I'll change it again when I get bored of it ;o)

The choice of what your signature will look like is a matter of personal choice. You can pay a lot of money for logo/signature design. A professional logo design could cost thousands of dollars, or as little as a few. It depends how much you want to put into it.

I have done logo design for a lot websites over the years and found three considerations are most important...

1. Ensure you like it. I always work with my clients on what it is they want to put into it - a logo has to say something about a person or business. Ultimately, if you don't like it then it is saying something about you wrong!

2. Logo design is something you need to experiment with. You will need to be sure it really says what it is intended to say. It is all too easy to give the wrong message to the people who see it. So if you design it yourself then make sure you do a bit of research first. Fonts in signatures say a lot about people - right or wrong. Logos do too. So check out some of the meanings.

3. Make is simple. Stylish, sophistication, comes with simplicity. The message is usually clearer too.

Creating your signature or logo can be done differently in every image editor. There are a lot of websites that will show you how to do it. Personally I always use Photoshop. The use of layers makes it easy to do the logo and redevelop it over time. Also you can embed it easily in the final jpeg too. However, every image editor can probably do the job.

No one ever complains that Picasso or Monet or van Gogh signed their work... no one ever complains that the fact they signed their work is a distraction.... so why are some people so hung up on people signing their work when its photographic art? Most people on 365 with a signature on their photos are not putting it there because they want to keep people from stealing their work... I think most (if not all) of us realize the quality of the image that is uploaded is not good enough for people to steal and print... they'd need us to send them a copy of the original if they wanted something print worthy. I sign my work because I'm proud of it.
