Blue Moon - August 31, 2012

August 27th, 2012
"Friday, August 31 – features a Blue Moon by the most well-known definition of the term. By popular acclaim, the second of two full moons to occur in the same calendar month is referred to as a Blue Moon.

Next year – on August 21, 2013 – we’ll have a different kind of Blue Moon: the third of four full moons to fall in one season. A season is the period of time between a solstice and an equinox, or vice versa.

When is the next Blue Moon?

Perhaps we should specify that this 2012 Blue Moon comes on August 31 for most – but not all – of the world. If you live in the far eastern part of the globe – like in New Zealand or far eastern Russia – the full moon happens after midnight, in the wee hours on September 1. So for that part of the world, it’s the first of two September 2012 full moons. Their Blue Moon won’t be forthcoming until September 30, 2012.

Astronomical almanacs usually list the time of full moon by Universal Time (UT). Today’s full moon comes on August 31 at 13:58 (1:58 p.m.) Universal Time. If you wish to find out the full moon time for your time zone, you must convert Universal Time to your time zone.

How do I translate Universal Time into my time?"
