Lighting help

September 13th, 2012
I am supposed to take pictures at a homeschool barn dance on October 5. I was informed last night that the pictures will be taken inside a stall at 6 pm, and I will need lighting. I figure I will need some lighting in the future, so I may as well get it now. Does anyone have any suggestions on what equipment to buy? I prefer not to spend over $150 and just get something as basic, but efficient as possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

I don't have any specific suggestions but if you want to rent better equipment than you can buy try www.borrowlenses.com They have a lot of good feedback.

Or type rent "camera equipment" into your favorite search engine and there will be a few others that come up.

The reason I mention renting over buying is that for the money you are more likely to get the setup you need rather than one you can make work. I understand your need/want for basic, effcient equipment, but what if you decide you don't like it or you need more to make it work in that setting? This is just a suggestion. Check out your options and get it as soon as you can so that you can become familiar with it before the event. (That is a drawback to renting).

This website gives a good description of different lighting kits for different budgets and might help you think about what you'd need.

boy for $150 you arn't going to get much that will be helpful. :(

There are cheap off camera, 3rd party strobes out there. You might be able to get at least one of them, but you should still find a way to get them off the camera.

You know... if I was lighting a barndance... and I only had $150 I would get...

2 trouble lights... 100 W or more each... point light in... hand cables along edges as part of 'framing' for photo...

1 or 2 stings patio latterns... I would prefer ones with no bottoms so you can hang them high... white light down... colors out...

and one portable light (Halogen or LCD depending on colour warmth) to back light from the ground, defused by straw pile or other... lighting for depth on back wall mostly to help subjects pop.

on camera / backet or near camera flash... defused somehow... if you still could perfect place to rent a med sized soft box...
