Canon EOS 40D-anyone use one?

September 24th, 2012
A camera was left at our restaurant almost three years ago. There were no photos on it that identified the owners. We informed the police and put an ad in the paper.
I only have a little Sony Cybershot right now and have been saving for a DSLR looking at Nikons and Canons.
I think I may begin to play with this one that has been gathering dust for quite some time. Is an EOS 40D still a good camera? Does anyone use one?
I will need to purchase things like a battery charger and lenses.
Would love to check out a project done with this camera.

I use one. Got it new about 3.5 years ago and have done the majority of my project with it. I like it! Let me know if you have any specific questions. I'm happy to help.

Awesome. I will! Thank you. I have just purchased the manual but haven't started working with it so no questions yet. Am following you now. Will check out your photos more thoughoughly when my girls are asleep.

Great camera. I've switched to a Nikon recently, but got some great pictures from the 40D.

Also, you have some really great pics with that Nikon...will try to go back far enough to see the Canon ones tomorrow.

@edie Thanks. Did the 40D have the 28-135 lens on it? That is a great walking around lens, it covers a lot of range. I added the 18-55 which is the kit lens on the lower end cameras, a "nifty 50" 50mm f1.8 and a 75-300. The 18-55 can be bought used for $100 and the 50mm new for about $100. You can get a basic 75-300 pretty cheap, but the IS version is a great thing to have if you plan to hand hold the camera.

the 40D will be a great camera for you to use... many wedding photographers a while back used to use the 30D

@mcrt It has a zoom lens on it. EP-S 17-85 mm. I have ordered the battery charger online and will look into those lenses. Definitely will need just a regular walking around lens. Thank you so much for that.

@toast Thanks Weng. That is exactly what I needed to know.

I owned a 40D up until about 6 months ago - its a great camera. Eventually upgrade to a 7d and gave the 40d to my daughter and she is also very happy with it. I also used to own the 17-85 which was a reasonably good lens. Again, well made - much more solid that the 18-55 kit lens. I would certainly give it a go for a while rather than buying a new one. Let me know if you need any help with it.

@gavbrowne Hey Gavin. I will. Thanks a lot. Just waiting for the battery charger so I can use it but will definitely post if I have questions.

Hey Edie! What a great find you have in the 40d. It was my first dslr and I used it from '09 until March of this year. So the first 2 1/2 months of my project were with it and various others since. I also strongly recommend the 28-135 IS USM Canon lens for it. It is the best walk around - can do fairly close up as well as a good range of telphoto. Very good for portraits, it's still my every day lens. If you are on a budget you can often find this "refurbished" by Canon on adorama or canon websites.

WOW! Here it is for only $289! (Amazon has it new for $450 which is good for brand new too. http://www.adorama.com/CA28135ISUR.html
This lens that I have been using since 09 was refurbished as was my 40d. It's my back up now and I used it heavily last month on vacation - shooting both with it and the 7d that I upgraded to.

Have fun Edie! You should enjoy that camera. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

@lindag hey Linda. Thanks so much. Will definitely check that out. (and look at the first two months of your project) Saving this thread for future questions. I really appreciate the help and suggestions.

@edie no problems.. from memory though, I dont think its a magnesium alloy body so dont wander around in the rain too much with it :)

@toast Damn.

@edie :) funny thing tho.. I've been known to wander about in the rain with my camera lol
September 24th, 2012
@toast So do I...way too casual about that...but it's a Sony Cybershot not this Canon...I may need to change my ways.

@edie General sprinkling is generally fine but in winter just throw a sheet of plastic over it
