Ghost shot

can anyone solve this as my partner is saying my camera has only shot for a few of the 8 seconds exposure and i dont believe this is true.

i took this shot and walked down the path during the 8 sec exp trying to create a ghost image in the shot but for whatever reason i have not appeared in the shot - why?

perhaps you walked too quickly? i've done quite a few of these sorts of things and in general i've found that the thing flying thru the scene needs to be in the frame a lot longer than you'd think...

I would say you moved too quickly; you have to practically stand still for half of the time, or move very slowly.

I just read this article http://365project.org/blog/a-guide-to-daytime-long-exposures
And is says in part that people moving through a long exposure will disappear. It's a great article on long exposures in the day time.

ok thanks folks, i possibly did walk too quickly, it was just a bit slower than normal

Yep, what @northy said. My friend and I did some of these playing around at (what is supposed to be) a haunted hotel in the area. I used a really slow shutter speed, would click to start the shot, then run into the picture, freeze and count to about 15 or so, then run back out. I showed up as a "ghost" but my running in and out of the shot were not seen at all. You would need to walk very slowly to make that work.

For this 30-second exposure, I was in frame for at least 20 seconds. And I am just barely visible!

i think i was in this 30 second exposure for about 15 seconds...

Yup, I did a ghost kiss on my boy's head while he was sleeping, and I was surprised at how still I had to get!

If you use a flash with a long exposure you can get a great night ghost. You will appear transparent from the exposure during the flash and can walk out after the flash and not see the walk away.

In this one, Stephanie stayed through the entire photo. The other two, were there during the flash and then just walked out of frame.

Just to share, I think the real trick is the timing, you have to move just about when the camera is about to shoot or know your camera.

you definitely walked too fast... I tried this before and had to keep redoing the shoot. I eventually just stood there for a few seconds and then very slowly walked away. I wound up with a ghost image of myself while I was still with just a hint of motion as I first started to walk away, but then I vanished by the 2nd or 3rd step I took. The photo had too much noise though, so ultimately I deleted it... I'll revisit it though very soon.

@grizzlysghost lovely shot!

There was a lot of people going in & out of this shot, the ones that stayed stationery for longer appeared in the picture

I did a selfie in front of my car head lights for 6 secs & a couple of them showed me walking back towards the car. Maybe more light might be a factor

My kids wanted me to try this out last year, and this is what we came up with. More comical than scary!
