ypur help pleas ..back- pack for laptop and camera

February 1st, 2013
I'm looking ahead to holiday and cabin luggage..
I don't trust either the laptop or my camera gear in main luggage , We can only carry one piece of luggage .. not even sure whwther we are allowed handbags ,

One of the bags i looked at is the Lowepro Fastpack 250.

Does anybody know whether this takes a 17'' laptop ?
or have any better ideas.

out walking each day I don't need the laptop , but the 250 has an extra compartment for sweater , pack lunch etc , plus space for my drinks bottle .

I'm sure there are many of you intrepid travellers and hikers out there , so all advice is very helpful.

Many thanks to all who answer..
June

PS *** just checked on line and my Hp pavilion G6 is officially caled a 15.6 '' .. still seems big to mw ..

@june Would it be worth looking around in Camera Shops for a laptop Bag as there are sales on or maybe a rucksack that you can have as hand luggage i dont know if this advice helps or a charity shop for your camera and laptop good luck be interested how you get on : - )

When you look online, it actually advertises it as only taking a 15" notebook. So no, it won't take your 17" laptop. Have a google - I just did, and the Lowepro Fastpack 350 takes a 17" inch.

Most of these backpacks have compartments, and also you can change the size of compartments inside to suit what you want to put in. But I will say one thing, please get a different way to carry your water. I never put food and liquids in my camera bag, its just not worth the risk. It just takes a leaky dodgy bottle, or slipping over and.... '-)

I have the Lowepro Fastpack 350. It does fit a 17" laptop, but don't overstuff it - it is only just small enough to fit on many airlines. It is worth checking the dimensions. It is a great day bag though - I can't personally carry it because I have a problem with my back, but my boyfriend will carry it fairly happily for a day. It does get very sweaty though!

I have a kata b bag that is camera bag at the bottom and rucksack at the top. They make a version with a laptop compartment too. I found mine seemed to be sturdier than the lowepro version I looked at.

@june I have the fastpack 250. It is great. It fits most everywhere it is just small enough to be a "carry on" on the plane. So again, don't over stuff it. It fits my 15.6" laptop, but just barely. I used it hiking in the Rocky Mountains Carrying a Nikon D300 w/ battery grip, 70-200mm, 17-105 kit lens, 12-24 and 50mm. It had space to pack a sandwich, jacket and a few other small items in the top compartment. Side note: I always carry a trash bag in one of the pockets in case it decides to start raining.
I would definitely suggest that if you buy it, pack your stuff in it and make sure it fits nicely before removing any tags.

I carry on a large tote as my purse. It has dividers so my laptop slides in and out, and I can tuck my power cord, camera accessories, jewelry, snacks, etc. Your purse does not count as a carry-on, but call the airline now to check. There are great small suitcases on wheels that double up for all of the camera equipment. You can always stash your everyday camera bag in your stowed luggage for the destination. Do not forget that you have to put all your carr-yon liquids (less than 3 ounces) in a clear plastic bag to be removed at security. They are tossing everything out! @june

I think cameras are allowed separately to the single piece of carry on luggage, in the same way you can also take your duty free shopping and handbag on. I don't know if laptops are also allowed separately, but I think so.

Is there an Ikea near you? They have great stuff at very cheap prices and good design. If you carry on the laptop fly BA.com they allow a laptop and a piece of cabin baggage. Generally it will just be the laptop.

I have the Lowepro fastpack 250 and I love it! Easily fits camera, 2 lenses, flashgun and my laptop as well as a load of accessories and personal belongings in the top! I've flown with mine plenty of times and it has always been within the size limits and I feel that my stuff is pretty well protected also :)

@bbf thanks for your comments..to be hnest I do like the look of the 250.

I have the small manfrotto tripod, I can't remember which one exactly but I attach it to the front of the bag, horizontally underneath the flap that clips at the bottom of the bag (if that makes sense!) I find it holds it in place pretty securely :)
