what is involved? does the "gallery" tell you how many, what size, how to frame, where to hang? or do you do that yourself? are you expected to measure out the available space? or is this info provided to you? do you hang them yourself? or is this done for you? just curious as to how this works... never really thought about it before, but i head something the other day that made me start to wonder :)
The gallery will probably give you specifics particularly if it is part of a group exhibit. If you are going solo then these issues could be determined by the artist in consultation with gallery space. It may be an issue to be considered if you are making a submission for sending support to exhibit as a new artist and for promotional costing
I just had three shots in a local show and they gave basic guidelines for framing. The size of the image could be whatever I chose, as long as it did not exceed a set dimension.

@northy it all depends on the gallery, but most are pretty liberal about size and print choices. They're also pretty good about walking you through the whole experience re: pricing your prints appropriately, printing, matting and framing. A lot of galleries have deals with printers and/or framers or will offer the service themselves for a pretty reasonable cost. Sooo, do we get to see your work on show soon??:)
It depends, but around here they like the artist to submit photo of roughly same size, and they tell you how many to provide for them. You provide the matting and framing and most want a wire on the back for framing. The gallery hangs on their walls usually.
Exhibiting in less formal spaces like cafe galleries means a bit more freedom of choice plus you do your own hanging. At a more formal gallery space a curator will generally do the hanging. It does depend on the gallery wishes and 'artist status' as to requirements for pieces to show. Based on the experiences of friends, not my own :)
@shutterbugger no, not yet... that's on my "to do" list (pulled those cards out this morning as it happens!)... just trying to figure out whether i can manage to sort something out on a possibility for exhibiting in a coffee shop gallery in montreal... my mom (who lives in montreal) had a friend who did this and said it was a lot more work than she expected... and indeed, it seems a lot - especially as i am 5 hours away, work full time and have kids involved in a gazillion organized sports...
Good questions...
