Nikon D3100 or D3200, please help?

Hi everyone,

I am really hoping someone may be able to offer me some advise. I have taken up a keen interest in photography and really want to get myself a DSLR I have narrowed it down to the Nikon D3100 and D3200 as they are both in my budget (£400 maximum). My main question is the D3100 has 14mp and the D3200 has 24mp, other than that I can't see many difference between them. Would I need more than 14mp to produce good quality images, for example to put on a 10x8 inch print or a canvas print? And is the extra 10mp worth the extra £100? Sorry if this is a obscure question but I am new to this all and don't want to regret my camera choice after a few months, I would like to be able to build my skills as well as my camera lenses etc over time. Any advise or even images taken with either camera would be highly appreciated.

Forget mp (within reason). I've printed A3 from my 6MP Canon EOS300D and they look fine, even close up. I'm sure they'd look great at A2 as well. Other than that I can't help as I don't know Nikon, but as with anything else in life I'd get the best you can afford within your budget.

Always go for the latest model in this case the D 3200. The extra 10 mp will help a lot to take better photos. It's worth the extra money. I did took photos with both cameras and the D 3200 are a very nice camera although I am a Canon user.

I decided on the D3200 - Just got it a few months ago and I love it.. As its my first DSLR, I just decided to go the route of the extra mp..
That way to me at least it would last a little longer as I most likely wont have a budget for a newer better camera for a couple of years..

Extra mp always helps but I would check out the Iso range of both. As ever it is what you can affords. Cant say much else as I am a canon user but hope this helps.

Thanks for the comments guys. I think after reading your replies I will go for the D3200 as like Scott I won't be in a position to buy another for a few years. Thanks again for the quick replies :-).

Its also worth considering the D5100, which has become cheaper since the D5200 has been released. The flip out rotating screen has helped me out a lot when taking shots of stuff in awkward places. It seems like a silly thing but I have found it extremely useful. Also, I wouldn't get too hung up on megapixels. All entry level DSLR's from Nikon will give you great results. Maybe spending a bit less on the body and getting a 50mm lens would be more beneficial if your sticking to a tight budget.

either one is fine. I use a five year old d90 which is 12mp and i can print absolutely beautiful 23x30 prints. MP are pretty much now just to sell new model cameras and get people to upgrade every two years. Most people never print much of anything anymore and the people that do usually get 8x10's so the extra MP just waste space on your computer and slows down editing. Neither will take better pictures over the other. Its all in how you use it. Both would make great starter cameras. Usually the newer models give you a little better noise handling but thats probably about it. Images side by side you would never be able to tell a difference. Just get whats in your budget and enjoy it. Both cameras are capable of producing great files if used properly. I would spend money on some lens and not the body. Enjoy what ever you get.

I have a D3100 and I love it. The D3200 has more upgrades then just the MP's and if I had the money I would have had that one. Or maybe the extra money would be spent on other lenses. Make sure you get a reversing ring, as you will get hours of fun from that :-)

I shoot Sony, but I would definitely go the route of spend less on body and more on glass.
