Lens going out??

July 11th, 2013
I have a canon EF 28-90 zoom lens that I have had for a very long time. It was the kit lens that came on my old 35mm rebel. I have had it about 9 years but I just recently (2-3 months) started using it again with my t3i and it acting funny. It will take a few photos but then it will go dark, meaning while looking to the view finder it gets dark and the lens no longer focuses or takes photos. I have to take the lens off then put it back on to take a few more photos before it does it again. At first I thought it was my camera but with other lenses it is not doing that, so... what could this be? a sensor going out? the lens just giving up because even though not used for years it is still old... i couldn't find anything after googling so I thought I would ask all you lovelys :) Thank you!

Did you try contacting Canon, just to see what they say about it. I'm thinking you're out of warranty but they might at least know what is going on and how much it might cost to fix.

sounds like the aperture blades are sticking on the lens

@soren Agreed. It will require the blades or aperture motor to be lubricated (or possibly even replaced if the motor is on the way out), which almost always requires a complete lens disassembly.

As the lens is only worth around $50-$60 looking on eBay, I suspect that, unless you want the learning process of taking it apart yourself and trying to fix it, it's unlikely to be worth repairing :(

You may be able to get the camera to keep taking shots (and cause the lens to temporarily unstick) without removing it from the camera by switching the lens into manual focus and taking a shot. The camera won't be able to autofocus when the blades are stuck as the focusing sensors can't see past the aperture blades, which will stop the camera from taking shots when it's in 'ONE-SHOT' mode.

@soren @aponi Wow thank you for your quick responses! SO it sounds like the lens might just be on its last leg then... Its not a huge deal to need it to be replaced or fixed I had just never seen anything like that happen and I couldn't find anything on google about it. I don't even live anywhere near a camera shop to have it looked at. I guess the good thing about a lens going out is I get a new one right? haha Probably just going to get the 50mm that I want and call it a day! Thanks again!

@tealgarciaphotography I like the way you think, you can't go wrong with a good 50mm

Yep - agree with the other comments - the lens is intermittently sticking. You could try Canon but if the lens is old it would probably be more practical to just replace it.

Good decision to get anew lwns . I put a lens in fro repair and the eventual cost was only £20.00 less tha a new one.
I was gutted.
