External flash help

August 9th, 2013
For some reason my external flash won't fire when my camera is on auto mode. Does anyone no why this could be?

I'm getting my stuff ready for a wedding tomorrow, which I'm 2nd photographer at (thank you all for your lovely comments and tips about that btw-you guys are fab!).

My camera is a canon 600d and my flash is a sigma ef-610. It fires when my camera is on manual, av or p modes but not when I'm on auto. I've got the flash set to ETTL.

I've read the camera and flash manuals and they seem to say that it should work so not sure what I'm doing wrong...

Any advice much much appreciated! Have to leave for this wedding in 12 hours!! Xx

I have no idea what could be your issue but I tried mine on auto & flash on ETTL and it flashed. Tried it a few times flashed everytime. I was inside with only natural light. Good Luck!

Simple, use P mode and stop worrying about it!

P mode is exactly the same as full auto, except for the fact that you can make changes if you want to!

Ideally at a wedding you'd avoid using P mode, and use A mode as a minimum, but as a 2nd shooter this is a good opportunity to build up your confidence!

The different modes allow you to control different aspects of the exposure:

Auto: You control nothing. The camera controls ISO, Aperture, Shutter.
Program: You control ISO. The camera controls Aperture, Shutter.
Aperture Mode: You control ISO and Aperture. The camera controls Shutter.
Shutter Mode: You control ISO and Shutter. The camera controls Aperture.
Manual: You control ISO, Shutter, and Aperture. The camera controls nothing.

If I were shooting a wedding, I would go manual, assuming the lighting is consistent. If it's not, then I'd go aperture mode.

Regarding the original question, though, it's possible that the camera is selecting settings that don't require the flash to fire. Try it in near darkness and see if it fires the flash.

Thanks guys.

I do generally shoot on manual but I wanted the option of setting everything to auto in the evening, just in case. I'll use P, good plan!
