HELP!!!!!! My 50mm lens won't come off my camera!!!

August 10th, 2013
Never had this happen before. Did any of you - what do I do??? I don't want to ruin the lens but even more so I don't want to damage my camera!
It is a Nikon D5100. The lens is an old lens that it has to be locked on the smallest aperture ring to work.

When I put the lens on last night I know I put it on the right way because I took pictures with it. It won't work if it isn't' on the right way.

I am really upset and worried! I can't afford a new one!

It might be a silly suggestion, but if you are somewhere that the temperature is warm, how about putting camera and lens somewhere cool, see if that helps

Try Sarah's suggestion, it is what I was going to say, but if that does not work, If you are close to a camera shop I would try taking it there and seeing if they can get it off.

I agree, take it to a camera shop! Peace

Check it's on right way up. Set the lens to it's widest aperture, f1.8 or whatever, and that number should be under the K in the word Nikon on the front of camera.

@iqscotland With this lens it has to be "locked in the narrowest aperture (f22) to work - it is a Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm 1.18D

I did try putting in the widest aperture as you suggested but it won't budge.

@myhrhelper Yeah, setting the widest aperture won't help getting it off but you would know if the lens was aligned correctly. It's not impossible to get one on upside down, the numbers on the aperture ring should be on the top of the lens.

If it doesn't move at all when you hold the release in it could be the release itself and the locking pin isn't retracting.
If it moves a little there may be some mechanical interference. There are several screws in both the mount and the camera flange and if one of them is loose or proud of the surface it will interfere with attaching and removing the lens. Clutching at straws now but you could try removing the lens with the lens pointing straight up or straight down. You can wiggle the lens a little if it'll move but don't apply any more pressure than you would normally. It'll either come of eventually or it won't. Force it and you'll break something.
