help with amount to charge

October 20th, 2010
Have a friend whose friend would like me to do a maternity shoot and an after baby is born shoot and I need to know what a fair amount would be to charge for both the shooting and the editing I would have to do afterewards. Keep in mind I am not professional. You can check out my pictures to see the quality of my pictures in my album. Thanks and any advice of any sort would be appreciated. BTW: THE BABY IS DUE ANY DAY.

I just went through this very same thing myself! I decided not to charge a sitting/session fee as this was my first maternity shoot (chalking it up to valuable on the job experience), and charged simply for the photos they choose to order. Once my client proofs the photos and decides what they want to order, they will pay me a 50% deposit, with the rest of the cost paid when the photos are delivered. You will have to decide where you are having your photos printed to see how much that is, how much you feel your time is worth, and how much you feel you want to make off of this. There is no real good answer for this- there are as many answers to your question as there are photograhers. Not sure this was very helpful, but good luck to you!!

mpix.com is a great place to start with ordering prints. They are reasonably priced, and great quality, great delivery time. (like the next day) I'd say charge around $10 per sheet. A sheet could be an 8x10, (2) 5x7s, (3) 4x6s or (8) wallets. The more they buy, the less it goes down per sheet. This is what I used to do when I first started out.
Also...for the after baby shot, if you want a happily sleeping baby that you can fold into all kinds of cute positions and into various props, do it no more than 2 weeks old. Get that baby in there asap. Like a few days would be perfect. Any older and you deal with them wanting to stretch out and waking up each time you move them.
Hope that helps.

Rachel...my strange take on this:

I have a friend who charges $50 and hour and gets a couple jobs. I have a friend who charges $300 per hour and is so busy she needs help. Lesson: Whatever the buyer is willing to pay.

With me, I just do things for friends, etc. I charge them $35 per hour (cheap), and depending on what kind of post processing, I charge for that too. For example, if I am doing portraits that requires masking, layering, etc. I will charge more for post processing than just adding some contrast to a background, etc. For post processing, I will charge maybe $100. Again, it is for friends.

If people are willing to go to Starbucks and pay $5 up to twice a day for a stupid cup of coffee with flamboyant marketing names, what is considered expensive to them?

My motto for today: Always do whatever is next

@moncooga totally agree- coffee is gone in 20 mins (or less) pictures last several lifetimes. I have done a few sessions for free to gain experience and get my name out there, and now t I will be charging a session fee (I thought $30 and hour) and have gotten so many emails this week it is crazy!
