Have any of you experimented with software plugins/filters that deal with various film quality/grain/texture treatments? Something more than the "add grain" of Lightroom/Camera Raw? The question is prompted by further reading of The Complete Guide to Black and White Digital Photography by Michael Freeman, the text that will guide the February Reading Club. The author mentions DxO Optics, but what other options are there, and what are your recommendations?
Even if you don't join the club, the book is a great read, providing great background and history on the subject and the film tradition that preceded digital. As well as lots of great images and practical assistance for what we can now do that the old masters could not.
For Black & White conversion, I use a Photoshop plug-in called Nik Silver Efex Pro. It's pretty mind blowing just what you can do with B&W with this software and it has a number of film effect presets along with fine adjustment of grain, tone and just about everything else you can think of. It now comes as a complete effects package offered by Google at around £/$130. I wouldn't be without it. http://www.google.com/nikcollection/
hey Frank... go thru the film grain sliders and choices in silver efex... there are all sorts of options.. also look in colour efex (part of same package)... i believe there are some grain options there too
I use Silver Efex and Colour Efex. You could also check out the free version of Perfect Image. There was a link to the free download in a discussion on here just the other day. I have the full set of Perfect Effects software...but they are old and I don't often use them. I am pretty sure that the black and white in the free download has some film effects.
