70d vs 60d

February 12th, 2014
OK - I thought I had just about convinced my wife to let me have a 6D - http://www.simplyelectronics.net/mainproduct.php?pid=21467&setcurrency=gbp&gclid=CIWXtJDIxrwCFXGWtAodQVQAPw - and then discovered lots of negative reviews of Simply Electronics - the same with one or two sites that sell the 6D quite cheaply. The old saying if it's too good to be true seems to be, well, true.

So I have dropped my sites a bit and now seem to be looking at the 60D or 70D. I must say I don't always seem to follow Canon's numbering system. The higher numbers are usually the more basic model, but the 6d seems to be better than the 7D, yet the 70D seems to be higher specced than the 60d.

I suppose I am looking for users opinions of both cameras. I am looking for image quality in low light, quality of focusing, and general build quality.

Opinions anyone??

I recently bought a 60D and am finding it very user friendly. The photos come out good quality with good focusing too. I still have plenty of learning to do, though. I'm extremely happy with my choice!

I'm a Nikon user but most of my friends use Canon so I am somewhat familiar with their cameras. For me, 70D is better. Newer sensor and higher ISO boost. So, that means it's better in low light situation... But if you can get your hands on a used 5D Mark 2, that's even better... Still a great camera even though the mark 3 is out.

It would seem the 70D is well received in the market. Great on chip phase detection that DSLRs have up until now not achieved. They had been outpaced in this area by the mirrorless systems, where of course the technology was essential. Here's DPReview on the camera. http://www.dpreview.com/products/canon/slrs/canon_eos70d.

I can't say I would even consider a 5Dii, 6 year old technology in a field where progress is relentlessly onward.

@frankhymus Having read a few articles I think I agree with you on the 5d mkii - I read an article that said the 70D and 5d MKii were pretty much on a par in terms of image quality, but the 70d had extras that the 5d couldn't dream of 6 years ago. Had a look second hand and a second hand mark 5D MKii is a similar price to a new 70d. I'd rather have the new 70D I think.

I would definitely choose the 70D over the 60D.

It has a much much newer sensor (the 60D and 7D use the same very old 18 megapixel sensor that was introduced in 2009 and used in just about every crop-frame Canon since then apart from the 70D, and while it was good in 2009, it's not so amazing in 2014).

It also has the same excellent autofocus system as the 7D, Canon's crop-frame action photography camera, which is probably the best autofocus system available on a crop-frame camera (and is a huge step up from the system on the 60D, and indeed that of the 6D, particularly for moving subjects).

I wouldn't worry too much about the 'dual-pixel AF' on the 70D unless you plan to do video work, which is the main purpose for it. While it's a neat trick, it's only for Live View mode, and when looking through the viewfinder you'll be using the 'normal' (and, as above, excellent) autofocus system that is shared with the 7D.

The 7D is slightly better built than the 70D, and with a faster framerate, can be considered a better choice for sports and action photography, although the newer sensor and same autofocus system would push me to the 70D, personally. The 60D, while an excellent camera when it came out, is probably not worth considering buying new today.

Love, love, love my 70D!!!! It is very user friendly (of course you still want to read the booklet to know how to use all of the features). I got the package with the 18-135mm lens...which I also love. Has a nifty flip out screen and that helps WAY more than I thought it would. Does great in low-light situations, and is weather sealed. I also love that it has wi-fi and I can link it with my smart phone and use the phone as a viewer or remote! It has touch screen as well.

@abirkill - just realized I couldn't hit LIKE!!! Lol

@abirkill Thanks for the comprehensive answer - I so wanted the 6d but it is definitely out of my price range from reputable sellers. I think the 70D is the next best (though apparently there may be a 7D Mkii this year).
@cindyloo I have so many times looked for a like button on here.

@iwatts

Ian,

I bought my 6D about a year ago. I'd done lots of research and read just about everything I could get my hands on in order to make the most informed and best decision I could about buying.

Here's why I spent so much time thinking it through: It's A LOT of money! I'm still relatively new to the hobby of photography. I was/am afraid I couldn't/can't bring justice to the camera bc of a lack of skill.

I LOVE taking pictures at night. Nothing else I researched could come close to the reviews of being able to do night shooting. Now, I know that's not the BEST reason to spend the amount of money I did. However, I can take pics whenever/wherever I want with any lens I own. My phone can/is used as a remote shutter via wi-fi connection between phone and camera and I can email pics geo-tagged directly from my camera. How cool is that? (I'll tell you. It was VERY cool when I was traveling last summer. Ppl could follow me on my trip via my photographs!)

I'm still not sure I do justice to the camera. I'm working on that everyday as I trip through my 365. I can already see improvement and know I will continue to do so.

I say, if you're heart was set on the 6D, buy the 6D. It's a phenomenal camera! I did NOT buy it from a reputable seller (unless you count me lucky to have purchased it from a reputable person on ebay). Oh...and the "kit" lens is a 24-105mmL lens. Holy crap! *That* (alone) started my love affair with L lens.

Best of luck as you make your decision.

@lynnilou @siotedelapena @frankhymus @abirkill @pixiemac @cindyloo @awsadler68 Well, I have taken the plunge - been on ebay and found 100% sellers, and got a reasonably priced 6d with the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. Very happy to say the least. @voiceprintz Thank you for making me see that sending nearly too much money on a camera that I didn't really want is not as good as in the end only spending a bit more and getting the camera I want with a really good lens. Thank you all for taking part in the discussion.

If anyone interested got the 6d for just less than £1000 and the lens for less than £400.
