50mm lens which one - Sigma or Canon?

Looking forward to seeing what you think is best? I have at present the Canon 600d and looking to get a 50mm lens.
I'm looking at the Sigma and the Canon 1.4. The reviews seem a little mixed but seem to suggest that the Sigma is better so hoping that my decision be be a lot easier after reading your opinions.
Thank you for taking the time to view and hopefully will make my decision a lot easier.

I dont have the sigma but do have the canon 50mm F1.4 and think its a great piece of glass. If you decided to get this one you wont be dissapointed.

Also, from a warranty perspective, I've been very pleased with the service time that i've gotten from canon. I've only just recently bought a sigma lens so cant comment on their warranty times.

You might like to look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZfBBQtZ_1w I have the Canon f/1.4 and like it very much but the Canon offerings are definitely an "older" lens design that is showing its age.

I have the canon one which i bought to use on my canon 450d and now use on my 650d. I like it very much, but dont have any experience with the sigma I'm afraid.

I also have the Canon and I love it. Didn't look at the Sigma so can't comment on that one.

Canon .. agree with all the above comments

@steampowered thank you Paul, so would you go for the Sigma 50mm?

@bizziebeeme Ah... the gazillion dollar question. I have not played with the Sigma 50mm lens. However, having owning two Sigma lenses (on a Sigma body) I can say that they produce nice pictures. My only issues with them were build quality and the tendency for the autofocus to be a little unreliable at times.

I have the sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX. I love it. It's my most used lens. I used to have the Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.4D, and I think the Sigma is about as sharp, but has less light fall off, and better bokah.

In the next couple months, Sigma is going to release a redesigned version of the 50mm f/1.4. The rumor is the image quality will be much closer to that of the Carl Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus lens than that of the Canon / Nikon 50mm f/1.4. And based on the image quality of the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art lens, I think they could probably pull it off. But it'll probably be pricey. If the image quality is similar to the Zeiss, and they keep the price under $1k, I'll probably pick it up.

@steampowered thank you Paul looks like the best option is the Canon.

@sudweeks thank you for replying with all the info but I think I'm going with the Canon, I'd love to go with the Sigma but it has auto focus issues? I'm finding it quite hard to chose between the two really but I may get frustrated with the auto focus issues with the Sigma I think.

@steveh @rachelwithey @cgarner @toast thank you all for replying looks like I'm going with the Canon

@bizziebeeme good choice on it. End of the day, while its old technology, the quality is still good. There also comes a time where you can nit pick about IQ between lenses but the real question you have to ask yourself is .. is this image sharp enough and decent enough for you?

these are awful images, but here you go... the canon 50mm f1.4 wide open
