Canon EOS 7D MK11 Recommendations

February 27th, 2014
I am looking at purchasing an external flash for the above camera, there are that many on the market and to be honest I am a little baffled by the range. Has anybody got any recommendations they could give me, with maybe a little information. I thank you in advance for your help.

Seeing as the camera is not out yet it would be hard to say. Personally I am very happy with the Yongnuo YN-568EX II ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00DEAUKCQ/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) as an on camera master falash, and the Yongnuo 565 EX ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/565EX-ETTL-Speedlite-Flash-Canon/dp/B007NE5W2C/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1393508344&sr=1-1&keywords=yongnuo+565ex+canon) as an off camera slave unit. These are excellent flash units and the 568EX II has practically everything the canon speedlite 580ex ii has / does at a fraction of the price.

@iwatts is right if you want to go non-Canon. You could also consider Nissin as a third party supplier.
If you want to go Canon then the "top of the range" at the moment is the 600EX-RT. As the lucky owner of two of these beasts I can pronounce them as being very versatile beasts but that versatility comes at a hefty price tag. Either the 430 EX-II or the 580 EX II will also stand you in good stead.

@steampowered Lucky indeed - my wife won't stretch that far... :-)

@iwatts I wait until my dear lady is otherwise engaged, slip down to Park Cameras, throw the credit card at whatever and face the music later!

@steampowered More and more Paul I keep looking for a like button here!!

@steveh March/April time according to rumours but they are just rumours. Hence my confusion - as it sounded like @oopsadaisy already had one
February 27th, 2014
@iwatts Going to the Photography show in Birmingham on Sunday Ian, I will ask the Canon guys about it, I have my doubts cant imagine why they would need one with all the models they have out now
February 27th, 2014
No, I havent got one, it's supposed to be coming out this following month, I am just looking at options at the moment and prices. I have the Canon 7D, sorry to add confusion to the question but like Ian said they are only rumours at present. Thank you all for your help, I will certainly take a look.

@steampowered Paul may I but in and ask you what flash I should buy for my Canon EOS 60D. I'm looking at the 430EX11. Is that good enough for portraits? I'm taking photos of a wedding at the end of April, and am rather nervous. Also, which lens is better - the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens or the EF 85mm f/1.8 USM lens? I have the 18-135mm USM lens and the EF 50mm f/1.8mm lenses and want to buy another one, or are these very similar? I have NO CLUE...help ;) please ...

@oopsadaisy aah - no apology needed for my assumption. Should be a good camera, and I suspect if I had the patience it may have been what I opted for over the 6d, depending on price. That said, I am more than happy with my 6d. Enjoy, and I suspect whatever flash you go for you will be happy. In the end I made my choice based on opinion on here and affordability. I could get a master and slave cheaper than the equivalent canon speedlite. In fact I could add up to 4 more slaves and still come in cheaper than the Canon 600 EX-RT - that would give me 6 flashes (not sure what I would use them for). Anyway, it's always a hard choice. If you want more information (you too @lynnilou ) see the discussion I started on similar lines - @Steampwered and @abirkill offered excellent advice - http://365project.org/discuss/general/21232/flash-confusion.

@iwatts thanks for the link and the advice. I will take on board the advice before I buy anything
February 27th, 2014
@iwatts Thanks for that info! It's really scary having to fork out your hard earned money on something that you are not sure will do the right job!
February 27th, 2014
@steveh Wow Steve - great photos with the 320EX flash.
February 27th, 2014
@oopsadaisy @lynnilou To be fair, my nephew bought this, and I borrowed it. It is purely manual, no ETTL, but still excellent - and only costs £26. It makes it a good choice to try out using a flash unit and your not spending too much. Generic make but good stuff, and forces you to learn manual settings. http://www.amazon.co.uk/NEEWER%C2%AE-TT520-Flash-Speedlite-Canon/dp/B004K689EO/ref=sr_1_4?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1393532100&sr=1-4

@lynnilou Hi Lyn. It isn't the equipment that counts but knowing what to do with it (as I have found to my cost!). It inspired me to take a couple of courses in how to use my Speedlights.

As for wedding advice, please take a look here for an earlier discussion. http://365project.org/discuss/tips-n-tricks/20949/advice-for-a-wedding-shoot

@lynnilou thank you , I was impressed with this little spedlite does the trick for me

I didn't think they had even released the spec for the new 7D mkII yet. If they have please could somebody let me know where I can take a look at them.
February 27th, 2014
No spec yet, it's rumoured to be *announced* (not necessarily released) towards the end of March, although it should be noted that there have been confident predictions of this camera's imminent announcement since February 2012.

Canon often have a quite long announcement -> release time frame, so it may not be available for a while after, even if it's announced in March. (The 70D took 2 months from announcement to availability, so relatively quick, whereas the 1DC took 13 months from announcement to availability).

I have a 7D and have found the 430 EXII to be great.

I have a 600d with the 430ii and find the flash great..
