Selling Photos - digital and print

March 30th, 2014
I'm not suggesting I am the stage yet where my photo's are good enough to sell, but I have noticed that there are websites that allow you to upload photo's and almost create your website, but they then take a commission based on what you sell. They take care of printing and delivering of anything that they sell.

I have just looked at Photobox, but really do not like the look of it, and wondered if anyone had any experience of other sites that offer a similar facility. Or an alternative.

I don't have a brilliant printer, and know nothing about framing, though I am unemployed at the moment so have time to learn. Just wondering what people's opinions are on the matter, and if anyone has found any type of success at selling their photo's and how.

i haven't had any luck selling them, but have an account set up on fineartamerica.com -- they do wonderful work printing and framing. I've done traditional prints, as well as metal prints and have been very happy with the quality -- and pricing. Not sure where you are, but I think they are international?

@ridley Thanks Michelle - I'm based in the UK. Photobox is, I think, a UK site, but it makes your site look like a Photobox site, and I was hoping to have more customisability.

Not sure if just a website would fit your bill, but weebly.com do a free website which can be very much personalised. Good Luck!

@barneyone Thanks Rita - I'm not looking for just a website but I do want a website - I need to try and develop several income streams (I already have design ones but it would be nice if my photography could generate some too). I'll look at weebly.com.

I've recently started using The Image File, you pay a very small monthly fee and then you can choose from a range of print companies. It's very customisable and they give you training and lots of help to set up. I'm impressed so far...

I use smugmug to host and sell shots for some clients. For the more expensive packages, I use Miller Imaging. My web site links to the smugmug site, but smugmug has full site capability. I just didn't want my site to look like everyone else's. However, I'm very happy with them. I've been with smugmug for a few years and Miller's for about a year.

@deeganp @thomastoth Thanks both - these sites seem to be exactly what I am looking for to totally customise the experience. Thank you.
