Selling electronic files

April 4th, 2014
My supervisor approached me today, to see if the corporation would be able to purchase some electronic files from me. Does anyone have any experience in doing this? Is there a way to help determine how much should be charged for such files?

I would love to hear any suggestions you might have.

I've sold image files via a stock library. If a company likes one of my images, they buy it via the library, who pay me, but retain some commission for themselves. Fees depend on what the image is to be used for. For something which has widespread use, like a national magazine ad, the fee is £450 sterling, per image. For something which has limited use, it is much smaller. Basically it comes down to what you think the images are worth, and what the company are prepared to pay. Without wishing to sound disrespectful, I wouldn't be too ambitous. It's gratifying enough to know that your images are good enough to be desired by a third party. I don't know how many images they want, but I personally would quote one fee for the batch. You will have to supply very good quality files - for the library I have to supply image files of a resolution of 400 lpi, a minimum size of A3 (420mm x 297mm). This makes roughly a 75megabyte file. Hope that's helpful!

First you need to see how they are going to be using the Electronic files. I have some companies in the Mountainbike would that purchase stuff like that from me all the time but I charge based on what they want. For instance, if they want complete rights to the photo/photos that is where you can charge an arm and a leg for a single photo. I usually charge
$1000-1500 for a single photo's rights. but if they just want they more Facebook or their website then make sure that you specify clearly that they are only to be used for that purpose and charge around 400 a photos.

@pistonbroke @cadevanheel Thank you both for your replies. The company is doing some re-branding. The images would be used for tv ads, brochures, flyers, etc. We are strictly local (by law), so the advertising would stay local, as well. I'm not concerned with resolution size, as I have all of my photos in RAW format (not sure why I keep them all that way...just don't take the time to clean them out I guess...good think I have a large hard-drive and back-up. I guess I should do something about that). I'm not sure that I am willing to give them exclusive rights to any photos. I take them because I like them, I didn't take them with the idea that they were going to make me a lot of money. Pete, you did not sound disrespectful at all. I really do appreciate any feedback. It isn't something that I am being overly ambitious about, but I also figured that if they are willing to support my hobby a little, why not let them. I do have a few photos for sale already (to help support the hobby), and I believe it is some of those photos in particular that they were interested in. I was actually quite surprised by the inquiry, as I really don't see my photos as being of a quality for such use...at the same time, I don't want to just be taken advantage of, either.

Again, thanks for all your feedback.
